Summary
Initially one of the leading bands of the British prog rock bands of the early 1970s and later one of the most commercially successful pop bands of all time, Genesis leave behind a diverse and influential fifty year career filled with classic songs, albums and live shows. Their early years were defined by fantastical epic pieces such as "Supper's Ready" and "Firth of Fifth"; they were largely motivated by lead singer's Peter Gabriel quirky stage presence and conceptual ideas, as well as the melodic sensibilities of keyboardist Tony Banks. After 1974's sprawling concept record The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Gabriel left the group to pursue a solo career. Drummer Phil Collins stepped forth to become the lead singer, leading the band gradually into a more accessible prog-pop sound that brought them a wider audience and some very successful hit singles; this shift was accelarated with the departure of guitarist Steve Hackett in 1977.
By the early 1980s', they had largely streamlined their prog rock sound and experimented with genres such as New Wave and straightforward pop music, though they always kept their experimental, quirkier side intact on songs like "Mama," "Home by the Sea," and "Domino." In 1986, they released Invisible Touch, their most successful record which marked a full fledged shift into pop territory, largely brought on by Collins' hugely successful solo career. Collins left the group after the tour for 1991's We Can't Dance, and after an unsuccessful stint with vocalist Ray Wilson, Genesis disbanded in 1998. They have reunited with Collins twice since then, in 2007 and on 2021's aptly titled 'The Last Domino' tour.
On March 26, 2022, Genesis played what was officially dubbed by the ailing Collins to be their last show ever.
