James LaBrie's voice is a key part of the DNA of modern progressive rock and metal music. His emotive tenor vocalizations have influenced a generation of singers and his work with Dream Theater has set the ground rules for what a quality progressive metal singer sounds like. Unafraid to explore the both the depths and the heights of his vocal range, LaBrie has played many a different persona throughout his discography all while being unified by a trademark passion and intensity. He was initially most known for his powerful 5th octave singing, often taking songs higher live than in the studio and utilizing a well developed rasp technique to serve as a contrast to his cleaner singing. Over the years, he has given more time to his lower range and middle register while still showing that he can bust out a quality scream from time to time. The standard of musicianship in Dream Theater may be absurdly high already, but it is LaBrie's melodic vocal style that keeps them grounded to quality songwriting even after a good three decades in the business.

Well, the story is that producer David Prater wanted LaBrie to record the track fully for each take rather than verse-by-verse, and given this was just after the infamous food poisoning incident, perhaps he was forced to play it safe?

EDIT: Just read up to this part in Lifting Shadows - LaBrie insists they ended up going verse-by-verse in the end.

On the other hand, given they'd be playing it live extensively I could imagine that it was toned down for that reason also. LaBrie was struggling enough to begin with around that period.

Similarly the amazing ending of the live NYC '93 version was toned down a lot for the final version. I guess I'd be surprised if these changes were made for songwriting reasons, given how powerful they were.

Since you've listed the equivalent section name of the live one, this one might as well be listed as "V. Another World" to make it clear that it's different.

I'm open to hearing suggestions on how best to handle that. iirc different people notewatched each of those epics so that's probably the reasoning, though also SDOIT is double the length of most of the other epics so it felt more cluttered without using the individual section names as separate tracks. Especially since they often play isolated parts of that track live without going through the whole thing.

I’ve never seen this happen myself outside of medlies. I’ve certainly never seen individual parts referred to as separate songs, in the same way I’ve never seen Trail of Tears or Presence of Enemies treated that way.

When they did the Falling Into Infinity tours they split the song across the whole show.

Anyhow, to me it makes sense to split it in the OP however the album splits it track-wise. On SDOIT each part is its own track, so I think it's fine to just use the part number (as another example, we wouldn't list "Finally Free" as "Scenes From a Memory").
ACOS on the other hand isn't split like that (nor is Octavarium) so it makes sense to keep the original title on those.

In other words, if I wanted to hear "The Test That Stumped Them All" that would be easy, but "Another World" or "Razor's Edge" would confuse me a little.

New Dream Theater song out, though it's pretty range conservative. A4s, an E3, and E♭3 were all I heard.

Musically I'd say it's not bad, but I'm gonna let it stand the test of time to see how much I find myself coming back to it and listening to it over again. Dream Theater kinda lost my interest after Black Clouds and Silver Linings, briefly regained it when they released their self-titled in 2013, but then lost it again when they released The Astonishing. I haven't even heard Distance Over Time yet, but maybe it's time to give their newer stuff another chance and see if they can make their way back onto my musical radar.

As for Distance Over Time, I think you'd enjoy it. I appreciated that their sound was streamlined a bit while still retaining their signature stylings, and also that the lyrics were shared pretty well across the band (even Mangini wrote lyrics on a track).

Everything since Black Clouds sounds like DT on autopilot. I suppose some of their spark disappeared when Portnoy left, because I’ve heard very little since then that was outstanding in any way.

A Dramatic Turn of Events was probably their most forgettable album to date for me. I've listened to it a few times now and I still wouldn't be able to tell you how a single song off it went. Though as far as the range spanned on it goes, this thread has the "Build Me Up, Break Me Down" A5s marked as lead vocal notes, so I suppose that counts as something less range-conservative at least lol

I think I'll catch up on Distance Over Time when the new album comes out in October. Covid permitting, I'm expecting to see them live in November, so if nothing else it would be good to be caught up on some of their new material so I can recognize it when they play it.

Found this live cover of U2's "Bad", recorded in Wantagh, NY in 1994. Unlike the Old Bridge 1995 performance currently listed in the thread (unless it's a different song called "Bad") LaBrie nails the C#5s. Also is it him doing the falsetto E5s beforehand? If so i'd also count those.

I hear how they seem a bit...tonally different than you'd expect his falsetto to sound, I guess? For a second there I suspected they might be Portnoy or Petrucci myself, but when LaBrie comes back in with the main vocal part at 46:10, it still sounds like the same voice in the mix. So yeah, probably him. Definitely good C♯5s as well, those should be added to the OP for sure.

Here's another new song, though once again there's not much to report in the ways of range. Literally just E3s and D3s and no highs whatsoever. I like this one instrumentally, but the vocals just...didn't seem to do it for me. I'm not sure if it might be cause of the notes the vocal melody is written around in contrast to the instruments, or if LaBrie's delivery was lacking in energy, but something feels like it's missing in that regard to my ears.

Overall I'd say it was a...pretty okay Dream Theater album. Some pretty good songs like "Awaken the Master" and "Transcending Time", but a number of others that I pretty much forgot about as soon as they were over. Also holy crap talk about a conservative range for vocals on it - I think this is the first Dream Theater studio album that literally has nothing fifth octave on it, and nothing even above A4 in a lead vocal. Literally nothing particularly interesting on the low end either unless those F♯2s are legit, and even those are only backing vocals.

I dunno, I understand if LaBrie needs to dial it back a bit in terms of high singing these days and doesn't wanna push himself too much, but it feels like he really didn't do much to try to make his vocals particularly interesting on this album, and they sound a bit phoned in overall. I think if it weren't for that the album would've been much stronger, because there were some pretty solid instrumental parts in a number of songs, but the vocals just didn't always live up to them.

That F#2 doesn't sound like LaBrie to me personally (might be Petrucci idk) and the C3 clip only sounds like it gets to around F#3 to my ears. Your take on the album is pretty much the same as mine though, I'm hoping it will grow on me but as of now it's a serviceably cool album that's largely lacking in true standouts.

Hmmmm...sounds like I may have gotten illusion'd on that alleged backing C3 from "Awaken the Master", though I'd be up for getting some more opinions on it if nothing else for the posterity of the album range listing.

As for the "Sleeping Giant" F♯2 - I hear what you mean about how it sounds darker and boomier on that specific note than LaBrie usually does in that range, but the beginning of the lower vocal in that passage doesn't sound too hard to believe as his voice to me. Perhaps they bass-boosted it or something? Easy to throw those kinds of effects on in the studio to make low notes sound stronger than they are.
