{Description}
The frontman of what is often heralded as "thinking man's metal band", Neil Fallon provides an essential facet of Clutch's sound and identity with his cerebral and esoteric yet high-spirited observations into culture, science, religion, politics and more, as well as his powerful, wide-ranging vocal abilities which remain strengthening over time. While possessing a gruff, deep sounding baritone voice, Fallon can most often be heard in his agile upper register, with melodies frequently touching upon the upper 4th and lower 5th octave. His raspy, burly tone is present even up to his highest notes, making notes up to tenor high D sound quite weighty compared to many other vocalists in their upper registers. His lower register has seen a decent amount of use as well, even if some albums of his feature him eschewing lower notes entirely. In my own opinion, it's difficult to tell whether his upper or lower register is the most impressive facet of his voice, as Fallon capably hits notes down to bottom of the 2nd octave without losing strength in his tone (the D2 in "Burning Beard" is my personal favorite note of his). His voice is very technically skilled not just in vocal range: his diction is extremely precise and clear while possessing considerable amounts of twang and grit in his vocals (or in "Careful with That Mic...", speed rapping better than many dedicated MC's). There aren't many long, sustained notes in his repertoire, but rather long passages and streaks of tireless upper register notes (and very capable lower register performances as well). 30 years into the band's history, Neil Fallon's voice remains virtually unchanged following his vocal growth from a more shouty, punk style into the technical yet passionate and hefty hard rock belter. Check his music out if you haven't; few bands seem quite as fun and proficient in their hard rockin' endeavors as Clutch.
