Louis Daniel Armstrong (4 August 1901 - 6 July 1971)
Years Active: 1919 - 1971
Voice Type: Iconic Scat Baritone
Vocal Range: G♯1 - B♭4
{Vocal Summary}The fact that it's taken this long for Louis Armstrong to receive a proper thread is nothing short of a disservice to him (much to my fault). Not just because of his ginormous influence on jazz and by extension popular music as we know it, but because of an opinion I've held for a long time that, when you hear it, should make complete sense. Louis Armstrong is, far and away, the most distinct, recognizable voice in popular music. Think about it! In a sea of singers who have taken immense influence from your Michael Jacksons, your John Lennons, your Frank Sinatras, and so on, no one really tries to sound like Louis full-time. He's all on his own, and perhaps for good reason; the gravelly, shaky tone he's most often associated with was a result of severe vocal damage initially brought on by illness and made worse by attempts to rectify the problem surgically. That's vocal cord surgery…in the 1930s. Yikes. Early on in his career he actually had a very clean tone and was surprisingly agile vocally, most definitely taking inspiration from his crooner contemporary, Bing Crosby. Come the 1930s, though, the foundation started to crack. He'd have some good days and some…less than good ones. His range dwindled pretty steadily during this period, eventually leading us to the voice we've all come to know and…well, I don't want to be presumptuous, do I? His voice certainly became an acquired taste from then onward, but you don't need me to tell you that. I'll be damned if it isn't immensely fascinating either way and, at this point, much more indicative of his sound than his trumpet playing or anything like that. Jazz man go scabba-da-zeht-ba-dada, indeed.
