{Vocal Summary}Most known for being the lead singer of post-hardcore band Saosin during the height of their popularity, Cove Reber stepped in for the highly regarded Anthony Green, who had left the band after their influential debut EP. Reber would front the band for six years before parting ways with the group, going on start two other musical projects, Patriot and Dead American (which, like Saosin, lean onto the more emo side of punk in spite of their politically charged hardcore punk sounding names).
Reber's vocal evolution up to this point can be split into a few different eras; first, his performances with Saosin, particularly from 2004-2008, in which his bright high tenor timbre naturally fit with Saosin's musical style. While not as bright or pristinely toned as his predecessor/later successor in the band, Reber performed Green's material skillfully, alongside new material which demonstrated powerful clean singing frequently up to D5 (even going as high as F5 with clear sustained notes). Starting in 2009, Reber began using distortion and screaming occasionally in his vocals, combining a grittier, more raw tone with his previously heard clean tone. While he showed capability with balancing both styles, this most likely took a toll on his vocal control during live shows, leading to his split from Saosin. His material from the early to mid 2010's with Patriot displayed him holding back on his upper register and strong belting, with softer mid-range performances. Once we get to his work with Dead American, Reber once again equips vocal distortion and uses it more than ever on his first releases with the band, reaching his previously attained higher notes through vicious yet well sustained and tonally potent screams. On his latest release with the group, New Nostalgia, Reber comes full circle with capable unclean and clean vocals up to high E♭, as well as a bit more emphasis on his lower register. It isn't particularly strong given his high tessitura, but even then, his vocals have slightly darkened over time, perhaps from his grittier approach to vocals which he continues to balance with the bright, boyish vocal stylings that he has become so recognized for.
