{Vocal Summary}
HARUNA, affectionately nicknamed HARU or HARU-chan, is the lead vocalist and band leader of the alternative rock (mainly but not only) band from Osaka, “SCANDAL”. Like her bandmates, she attended the dance and vocal training school “Caless”, where the staff put her together with MAMI, TOMOMI, and RINA to form an all-girl band at the request of Kitty Rights & Entertainment. The quartet formed SCANDAL, and self-taught themselves. Praising self-acceptance and gender equality, SCANDAL started with a striking contrast of school uniforms (which they dropped in 2011) and garage rock, playing (sometimes for no one) in the park of the Osaka Castle Hall, their 13,000-seat dream venue that they achieved in 2013 with a concert that sold out in five minutes. They have gained a progressive emancipation on songwriting that they longed for since their start, as well as popularity and well-earned respect to play at festivals in Japan, and to be invited to play concerts and events around the world. With all of their 10 studio albums having ranked in the top 5 spots of the Oricon weekly sales charts, they are still a major reference, influence and trigger for the current generation of all-girl bands in Japan, where male-fronted rock bands dominate the scene.
HARUNA sings lead vocals on a vast majority of their songs. She occasionally writes music and lyrics for some of their songs as well (“Graduation”, “NEON TOWN ESCAPE”, “Yuugure, Tokeru”, to name a few).
HARU’s voice has gone through multiple changes over the years. She first started with an identifiable, powerful, and deep mezzo soprano voice, and a clear and round mid-upper register. Due to her younger age at the time, she had an easier access to the bottom and mid fifth octave, and less to lows, despite a naturally deep voice. In early 2011, however, she started experiencing some serious vocal problems, most likely due to tour fatigue and a lack of technique adapted for tough tour schedules and media appearances, all while SCANDAL’s popularity kept growing. This gave her a hard time even in the upper fourth octave, causing her voice to sound rough and tired. This can be heard in particular on certain songs of SCANDAL’s third album BABY ACTION; on “ALONES”, a cover B-side song from the single HARUKAZE; as well as certain 2011 live performances. While the idea of playing concerts without her was floated, due to how hard it became for her to sing even within her comfortable range (explaining the questionable character of the Stereopony cover C♯5 in this thread), it was quickly abandoned because, to quote the band members, “it would make no sense”. HARUNA was able to get back on track, taking better care of her voice than ever before. A crucial time came for SCANDAL when they played at Nippon Budokan on March 28, 2012, at the time being the fastest all-girl band since their debut to have reached this symbolic point, where she miraculously gave a great vocal performance for an over two-hour-long concert that also happened to contain her highest countable note. The vocal discomfort lessened over time until almost disappearing completely by mid 2013, both in the studio and on stage.
After spending a tough and lengthy time to gain back her full potential, her voice was noticeably less deep, but she kept an easy, better access to her lower register with more control, staying comfortable down to G3 (notice the smaller amount of low notes starting from F♯3). Therefore, even if her higher register sounds thinner compared to her pre-2011 voice, she remains a mezzo soprano, albeit a relatively high-placed one. Finding a healthy technique that could be sustained for the duration of a tour, she became more consistent during live performances and also refined her singing and tone over the years, desiring to sound more honest, natural, and comfortable; “Departure” is the perfect example of this new beginning. “eternal” is also a notable recent example where she sung as if she was speaking.
HARU now has a bright, resonant, and fairly thin voice that shines brightest in the upper fourth and bottom fifth octave, and can be quite powerful. She uses the mid fifth octave during energetic moments such as when she hypes up the crowd, and even has the occasional, controlled rasp. A slight and natural rasp can also be heard in her warm and very pleasant low register. She has a recognisable tight vibrato that adds charm to the calmer tracks of SCANDAL’s discography in particular (“Mado wo Aketara”), while her belted notes usually aren’t strong on this vibrato. As can be seen in the thread, HARUNA has recently given more love to the bottom of her vocal range with some of her lowest recorded notes. However, her whistled register that even reaches the seventh octave remains fairly unexplored, as it has not been used in studio recordings, and all live notes except for one being too short to be counted. Though she does not use it heavily, she also has an occasional and well-controlled falsetto that is rather thin and breathy. The relative comfort of her lowest recorded note suggests that she may be able to go lower and will keep exploring the lower part of her vocal range like she did on SCANDAL’s tenth album MIRROR, although she relied on her higher chest and head register a little more with the band’s following album LUMINOUS. These two albums showcase HARUNA’s determination to constantly evolve as the band’s main vocalist. Her voice and tone sound more comfortable and confident than ever before, and she has gained back an easy access to the bottom fifth octave.
Although she and her bandmates tested positive for COVID-19 in the middle of the band’s July 2022 North American tour and forced SCANDAL to cancel the rest of the dates, as well as caused her to have a few instances of vocal fatigue during concerts in the following months, she has remained careful and is still a solid vocalist. In conclusion, HARUNA is sure to have more delightful vocal lines in the future.
