Darroh Sudderth was the vocalist for the defunct alternative/progressive rock band Fair to Midland, from its inception in 1998 until its breakup in 2013. A very versatile vocalist, known for switching between highly contrasting vocal styles sometimes during a single song ("Rikki Tiki Tavi", for instance, features some very aggressive "though guy screaming" and very sweet Beatles-esque harmonies). During the earliest, nu-metal influenced FtM records (the demo and their first album) Darroh didn't explored his range in a more conventional way, but rather creating strange, vaguely-oriental melodies and unusual voices in a style not dissimilar to early Jonathan Davis (from Korn) or Chino Moreno (from Deftones) - as well as screaming more often than he'd do on later albums. One interesting trick he would continue doing later on his career is a "manual vibrato" technique consisting of rapidly stroking his hand against his throat to give his voice a shaky character.
From the second FtM record inter.funda.stifle onwards, along with the change in sound the band took towards a more melodic direction, Darroh started exploring his range much more, albeit it would be noticeable he didn't quite mastered his high range technique yet because more often than not his notes would have a tense, "yodeled" sound - which still could be observed on the band's third album Fables from a Mayfly. A song like "Dance of the Manatee" (one of the band's most well known songs) showcased Darroh's penchant for alternating between his high belts, his shaky softer singing and his somewhat nasal mid range as well as less conventional techniques, such as throat-singing and his "gold prospector" (as nicknamed by Justin Bonitz of Hungry Lights) screaming style. Arrows and Anchors, the final album released by Fair to Midland is probably Darroh's finest moment as a vocalist. Now possessing a much better control over his high range, he also explored his lower range a little more and employed the most layered harmony work of his career as well as his less conventional styles like kargyraa throat singing and the gold prospector voice.
