Sufjan Stevens (1 July 1975)
Associated Acts: Marzuki, Sisyphus
Voice Type: Nick Drake and Elliott Smith's lovechild (but… less sad)
Vocal Range: C♯2 - E♭5
{Vocal Summary}Sufjan Stevens is an interesting character to say the least. The man has put himself in a niche not many can sort themselves into very easily. Somehow blending folk and electronica with relative ease, and (for the most part) it has worked out for him. Making amazing works such as "Illinois" and "Carrie & Lowell", this for the most part also works out in more experimental scenarios such as "Age of Adz".
This is all wrapped up with his honest anomaly of a voice. Seriously I have yet to find someone who can sound like so many people yet sound so unique at that same time. On one hand, he definitely sounds like a lovechild of Nick Drake and Elliott Smith, with his breathy low tone, somehow sounding light as a feather yet going quite far into the second octave, these two are definitely the singers he bares closest to, especially in his earlier works. However, he also sounds a bit like Ray Davies from the Kinks in his mid to upper fourth octave chest register, with his rather slow delivered vowels and somewhat adept belting skills and on some occasions, he sounds like Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins with his rather nasal tone on his EPs such as "All Delighted People" (though I will admit, it is a lot less grating), not only all of that, he also sounds like a hybrid of Stu MacKenzie and Ambrose Kenny-Smith from King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, with his breathy higher register and adept low range. Like I said, he sounds like a lot of people.
His voice typing is also an anomaly, to the point where I still haven't entirely figured it out yet, with the only thing I am certain of is just, he is not a bass. So is he a tenor? Mehh, I'm not so sure about that, he certainly has a light tone to the point of determination that you would think that immediately, however his belting hard caps at B♭4, with noticeable struggle past F♯4, meaning if he was indeed a tenor, he would not be a very technically capable one. So he's a baritone then? Mehh, I'm not sure about that one either. He's certainly got a very adept low range, however as stated earlier, his tone is stupid light, with volume usually dipping out below B2. It is definitely the safer bet out of those two however, because as you can see, he uses falsetto A LOT, which would probably also explain his light tone.
So I will let you be the judge of that one. Tenor? Maybe. Baritone? Probably. He's just a good singer, man. What do you think I am, a vocal coach?
