Ogiishi Akira (born December 5th, 1975)
Associated Acts: ikd-sj (2004 - Present), Vivarium (Unknown period)
Vocal Range: F♯1 - C♯6
Vocal Type: Breaking News: Man Spends 10 Years Listening to Mike Patton's Side Projects and Auditions For Joker Using Only Trailcam Footage Of Himself At Midnight In Liminal Carparks Predicting How Death Grips Entire Discography Will Sound
{Vocal Summary}
Sounding more like a demon desperately trying to free itself from its mortal prison than a singer, Akira Ogiishi is the frontman of the metal band ikd-sj. A band with so many subgenres that the band ended up dubbing themselves "ambient grunge metal" - even though elsewhere they're touted as one of the most flexible and respectable nu-metal bands out there that aren't deftones.
The band's genre labels that are never consistently pinned down speak for themselves - and part of this is due to the chameleon of a singer that Akira is. One second you're hearing this guy laying down bars in a chill, sinister manner akin to a movie villain whose gone so insane he's started to rap - and the next second he's doing ear piercing screeches that do not remotely sound like they should be coming from a normal throat. This guy incorporates choking, laughing, growling, frog noises and all sorts of other strange techniques to give this bands already versatile sound an extra pinch of madness that makes you make that face you can only make when you've heard the most disgusting thing ever but KNOW that it's great.
Technically, Ogiishi has a LOT more to him than just Mike Patton/Kyo-isms on steroids. He's fairly low placed and seems to have the natural vocal range similar to that of a crooner - and while this guy's highs start at D4 that does not stop him from randomly deciding to hit mixed 5th octave notes without warning in the middle of songs filled with low screams and pitchy moans. His lower register is generally used more for rapping and isn't the most stable below G2 but GOD does it sound evil and smooth when he decides to use it. If you want a good taste of everything he's capable of check out "BLACK APARTMENT" - it's a horrifying trip and a half that you won't regret.
So yeah, I'm very glad I discovered ikd-sj and their cult following on the nu-metal charts of rym - they're a one of a kind band with a one of a kind vocalist who sounds WAY to good to be pushing 50. This band's got so many genres mastered that pretty much anything they do from this point is gonna be interesting and I have faith that Akira Ogiishi will be enjoying every last second of it
