{Vocal Summary}I'm gonna give you all some backstory here, as I know what you're thinking. That is, if you follow my threadmaking history at all. Why would I make a thread for blackbear?
Setting: some night, a spell ago, probably in my bed. I open up Instagram because, as a professional sociopath, I am unaffected by social media, doomscrolling, and the other assorted horrors therein. I start watching some stories. There is this one lady with whom I might have gone to school or whom Instagram was simply keen on recommending to me because we live in the same area of southeastern Pennsylvania, firmly within the BosWash megalopolis. I do not know if/how I know her, and I am not bothered to learn. Within her story is a TikTok, one she filmed herself. Now, despite my general indifference to all things social media, I do normally go out of my way to avoid TikTok. I've never made an account and I try not to watch them whenever I can. However, before I get to scrolling past this woman's slapdash lip-syncing and finding something that doesn't make me cringe so viscerally, I hear a couple seconds of what was either a cover of or a nightcore remix of one blackbear's "weak when ur around". I, being perpetually insecure about my rather uniform music taste, decide that this song is catchy enough to look into. I search the lyrics, identify the song, and am led to blackbear's dead EP, which I thoroughly enjoy. The acoustic guitar really does wonders in bridging the gap between my oldhead roots and the stylings of today. Being a chronic TRPer, I check the index and promptly claim him, assuming that most of his music would be similar to this.
It is not.
Very quickly was I thrown into a mess of overproduced dubstep and daft lyrics that I had not known I signed up for. My pride being too great, I refused to rescind the claim and instead followed through.
Things weren't so bad, however…
Eventually, his music got better. digital druglord, ANONYMOUS, everything means nothing, and especially in loving memory are all solid albums with more interesting arrangements and comparably mature, introspective lyrics. This is still most assuredly not my style, but I can respect these albums and may even be coming back to some tracks within.
Anyway, his voice.
