Boruch Alan Bermowitz (23 June 1938 - 16 July 2016)
Associated Acts: Suicide
Voice Type: Christopher Walken and William Shatner making Synth Punk
Vocal Range: D2 - F♯6
{Vocal Summary}What does it mean to a bad singer? Truly, what does calling someone a "bad singer" mean. Some might say this is an entirely subjective thing. Like, you hear people calling singers all the time "bad". "Oh Justin Bieber is a bad singer.", "Roger Waters is a bad singer.", "Miley Cyrus is a bad singer", "Johnny Cash is a bad singer." But when they say that these singers are bad per say it's really just a matter of personal preference, all by a subjective matter, when people call these singers bad, they really are just stating a matter of personal preference for the most part. All a subjective matter, because all of the singers stated above definitely have some good singing merit to their voice.
When you get to the realm of so-called objectively bad singers, there are very few that would actually fit the shoe, some with pretty much no sense of melody or rhythm, or use techniques that are questionable at best, first ones that would come to mind for me are GG Allin, Nico, Tom Verlaine (I'm so sorry I love you but you kind of suck at singing), and probably the worst offender out of all of these is yours truly, Alan Vega.
I'm not joking when I wanted to say I wanted my eardrums to explode a couple of times when I was listening to this guy, while he is able to somewhat pull through with some sense of melody in some of his earlier tracks from about (1977 to idk sometime around the late 80s ig), with songs such as "Ice Drummer", "Ra-Ra Baby" and a couple late career performance with "Flashy Love", "Sister" (or most of Cubist Blues tbh). However, then there is… "Frankie Teardrop".
If I'm gonna talk about Alan Vega, I need to talk about "Frankie Teardrop" a 10 minute song from Suicide's debut album, "Frankie Teardrop" in a sentence is an absolutely agonizing vocal performance in the best way possible. Seriously, in this song he manages to do things that would absolutely shred a normal person's vocal cords, screaming like an absolute madman over this looped synth pattern from Martin Rev, and it just doesn't let up throughout the whole performance, it is truly inspiring and absolutely headache-inducing at the same time.
However, most of his performances outside of a select few make him sound like Christopher Walken on opiods. I swear something must have happened, because whatever sense of melody he had before the late 80s he completely lost in the 90s and onwards, often making some sort of mumbled drone past that point.
Now, by this vocal summary, you might get the impression that I hate everything about Alan Vega and all of his music, and to that I say FUCK NO! Seriously Suicide's debut is one of the hardest albums I have ever heard and there has not been a single performer since then that I can think is as unique and interesting in the way Alan Vega was. Dude was truly a one of a kind performer and musician and singer, and it was truly a big loss when he died. Listen to him folks, regret it or not.
