Michael Barnes
Associated Acts: RED (2002-present)
Vocal Range: A1-F5 (3 octaves, 8 notes)
Vocal Type: Inner Fighting Tenor
{Vocal Summary}
Hailing from Pennsylvania, Michael Barnes has become one of the most recognizable and lauded singers in modern hard rock and metal scene, being famous for his work in the symphonic-tinged nu metal/post-grunge band, RED, with most of the generation in the 2000s to now seeing themselves as fans even those who do not share the band’s core beliefs. His strong tenor vocals have always been a selling point as he has the praised for his emotional performances that convey feelings of desperation, comfort and rage all sometimes in the same song. His high register is strong being able to add a sense of vulnerability and passion to his expression. He is also known for his screaming which unlike most nu metal singers can be able to scream those notes with more tacked and grace than most being able to sustain the distortion and the power. Most screams in the earlier moments of his career were mid-range being the same note as the highest note in certain songs however around the mid-part of his career began to go much higher and more unhinged able to scream as high as the mid fifth octave. His lower range is also strong despite him falling on the stereotype of post-grunge singers not using their lower range that much, but he still sounds just as emotive singing low and sometimes even uses the "attitude fry" when trying to sound intimidating. Barnes will continue to keep giving out strong and cathartic work giving much needed melodies for this new generation.
