Vocal Type: Dancing Like David Tenor
{Vocal Summary}
In the world of nu-metal one critique that the genre has is that most vocalists sing in a mid-range voice and don’t go much beyond their range. Arkansas native, Matt Baird begs to differ. He is one of the strongest tenors I have ever heard. With his band, the alternative metal/post-hardcore, former rapcore group, Spoken has garnered recognition for Baird’s high blistering voice which made him an easy choice for people to want him to guest appear in collabs. In his early career, Baird was mostly focused on rapping, occasional yelling and mid-range singing for mostly the first two albums, however on the third to recent music, he started to use more of his high register in singing and started to scream more, while the rapping has been largely diminished. His voice is high as a teakettle able to sing around the mid fifth octave both singing and screaming the same notes. He does have a lot of strong lung control and has been able to sing those high notes over and over again within a song. His lower register however is not that well-known despite him being able and has been mostly used when rapping, backing vocals and rarely singing though he is also good at it despite mostly singing around the high second octave. Baird is a man of talent and so far, has not shown signs of stopping what he has started since the late 90s.
