{Description}A legendary figure in the world of indie and alternative music, Calvin Johnson's DIY spirit and large body of work have held a massive influence. It is particularly noticeable on Washington's music scene, which would further bloom in the 1990's and many artists who have worked on his label, Y Records (with releases from Modest Mouse, Sleater-Kinney, The Microphones, Beck and many more, also pushing forward the riot grrrl movement and developing the musical style twee pop/punk). His own musical projects span various styles, from noisy indie rock and pop to dub infused funk to stripped down acoustic balladry and beyond, and he remains active as a musical artist and label leader to this day.
This leads into his attention catching vocals. While being considered "the first star of twee", which made for a softer, sweeter, less macho approach to punk aesthetics, Calvin's posseses a gruff, languid bass-baritone and very much emphasises his deep, droning lower register above higher notes. Nearly all of his performances span down to the lower 2nd octave, with notes down to D2 commonly being loudly projected and highly resonant, and some strong moments into the upper 1st octave (before seemingly fading away below that). A couple of these booming second octaves notes are used for entire verses or choruses and sustained for up to 8 seconds at a time (in songs where they are used many times), while still making for dynamic, rich vocal moments. Simply put, his lower register is naturally among the strongest there are in all of rock and pop, if just for the fact that it is so durable and highly used.
As for his upper register, some may be surprised that it extends to the extent that it does. While even A3 isn't as common of a note for him as D2, Calvin displays consistent bellowing/belting abilities up to D4 with some strong sustained notes. His few notes above F4 are mostly split between disconnected yells, vocal inflections or his aloof, wailing falsetto, in which he is at his most vulnerable (and therefore twee) vocally. His head voice register typically colors off the lines with gusto, spiralling into off key hootin' and hollerin' akin to that of a baby animal (and one who finds it very difficult to go above E♭5 even when trying hard). He does sustain several of his falsetto notes tirelessly, but all things considered, it is where his pitchiness is most noticeable. All of this adds up to an unmistakable voice and set of vocal qualities, right down to his signature hard exhales in place of screams.
