Hey everyone! This was my second thread, and wow was it way harder than the first one. Justin has so much material, and so much of it is highly questionable. First off I want to say, if you find mistakes or questionable choices in this thread, please let me know. I did my best but there is so much content here and the lines I had to draw were arbitrary at best. I'm more than open to making changes to the thread if needed.

Secondly, I know the amount of questionable notes is kind of absurd. Justin does have a very low voice, but he rarely expresses it, especially in Motion City Soundtrack. It seems like the way he expresses his lower range is primarily through anacrusis, but obviously it's a hard sell to put that all on the main listing. So as much as the questionable notes shouldn't count, per se, they are worth having because they are a very important part of his range and vocal style.

And thirdly, I would *love* to get a second opinion on the C6 in Immolated. I've gone back and forth on it for months now and would love if someone who's experienced in notewatching distorted screams like that could settle it :)

Hi again, I think I've fixed everything. The Immolated note is an F5 now, I put a C6 in questionable notes because I still think I hear it but I'm not stubborn enough to keep it on the main board when two 5+ star notewatchers have agreed on F5.

Edit: I cut the whistle scream C6 too. I have no good reason to include the C6 when I'm excluding the E6. Since last time, I've actually done some whistle screaming, which made it clear to me that it shouldn't be counted. That makes Bb5 his highest note, and I linked the background one in Mad Operator, which seems weird, but the Bb5s in SOAB/SOAW are even more brief and even less melodic. (Edit: Very brief and very melodic. And very A5. I cut those, too.)

Also added a confusing and excessive E6 whistle to questionable notes, a few extra notes I forgot or misclassified, corrected the time frame for Slide Coaster, and deeply regretted my decision to notewatch this guy. Basically, it should be all good now. Thanks for the feedback, I do genuinely want to make this thread as good as it can be and y'all have definitely helped with that :)

I don't find the C♯2 countable personally "^.^. I'd personally say it's more a breathy low slide that you get when suddenly relaxing your larynx rather than an aimed note. Perhaps we could use more opinions?

That's fair, there are a few things that incline me to keep it though. I'd bet that it is aimed, the melody of the song (and the landing note of the accompanying low slides) would facilitate it, and there are a couple other times where he lands on C♯2 in other slides. (Those are too brief to count, but they do happen.) If it isn't aimed, though, he still hit it multiple times and nothing lower, which gives creedence to it being his lowest note. I could be convinced to re-classify it as a nonmelodic grey note (I'll admit that I'm terrible at distinguishing the low note techniques), and with enough support I'd remove it, but I think doing so would hurt the usefulness of the thread.

Ultimately, none of the notes below F2 are all that good. Justin clearly has a low range, but his expressions of it are few and far between. March of the Pigs' E2 is very, very brief; Patsy Cline is just talking; Crooked Ways is functionally an anacrusis, just held for a more significant period, etc. I know they're pretty sketchy, but to say Justin's lowest note is F2 would be more wrong than including them, I think.

To me it seems like even if he did aim for it it's too ambiguous in order for us to determine whether he meant it or not. It does sound like he could maybe pull off a good C♯2, but that passage isn't something I would use to prove it.

Is this to advocate for it being nonmelodic or it being removed? It could still be countable without him intending to hit C♯2, right?

I'd put it in questionable notes, personally. Regarding the latter: sometimes, if it's strong enough.

Big changes to the thread! I was way out of my depth when I took this on (and, to be clear, I'm still probably underqualified) but I revised it with what I know now, and with a lot of help from Electric Mami pitching some of Justin's nonsense. The biggest difference is the new anacruses section.

The ASFTBOTS C#2 is still there, for all the reasons I outlined earlier. Opinions are pretty split on it, so I figured I'd go with my intuition, but more opinions are definitely welcome, I am taking them into consideration. I do think his low voice just kinda sounds like that sometimes: look at Anything At All, for example. (The anacruses on The Reflecting Skin and Immolated are also good examples of how the production on Hey Hey Pioneers can make his voice sound a little off sometimes.) My last post kinda sounded like "I am counting notes that I don't really think should be counted because he can probably sing them well", which isn't what I'm saying. I looked over all the low notes and I find them all to be countable. Teetering on questionable, but countable.

This is like the third time I'm saying this, but the thread *should* be complete now. Hopefully :)

I also bolded an anacrusis because chaos. It's a really good demonstration of his pitch control, in my defense. But also chaos!
