{Vocal Summary}
For most, metalcore may seem like a generic genre for vocalists. “All you have to do is scream and sometimes sing or have another person sing” is what most will say. Arkansas native, Cory Brandan Putman is one to do a perfect balance of both singing and screaming. He is well-known as the powerful lead in the highly influential chaotic metalcore band, Norma Jean replacing the universally declared as almost irreplaceable, Josh Scogin (who later went to front, The Chariot and then ‘68) who even to this day many fans still prefer him over Putman. But make no mistake that Putman himself has talents that lend to many first times listeners question how he was able to do that. Putman’s voice is described as aggressive, chaotic and powerful being able to scream very high as well as sing high too and even make a mix of both sung and screamed vocals or “melodic” screaming which he can go as high as the mid fifth octave. In many instances his voice can sometimes be reminiscent to the likes of Chino Moreno (who he collaborated with in The Anti-Mother) except with a more southern flare. Most of his bands mainly focus on screaming with singing in the mixed while only his project, Hundred Suns have him singing more prominently than screaming and Fear Is The Driving Force being the only project he has that has no singing and only screaming. His lower register while used less is also still powerful being able to sound moody and expressive in the songs usually to convey pure emotion. Putman is a strong vocalist who may have sadly been overshadowed by the work of a previous vocalist but nevertheless as proven to be an absolute monster on the mic.
