For most, a title as honorific as "The Queen of Soul" would seem like a massive overstatement - for Aretha Franklin, though, the title is completely justified. As one of the best-selling artists of all time, Aretha's distinctive vocals became synonymous with '60s R&B music, leading to her becoming defining figure in the then-ongoing civil rights and feminist movements. She both epitomised and revolutionised what it meant to be a soul artist; from her elastic melismatic runs on "Chain of Fools" to her impassioned belting on the anthemic "Respect", as soon as Aretha sang something, you instantly knew it was her. What was most notable about her singing wasn't her clear technical prowess, though - it was the fact that she so clearly enjoyed what she was doing.
