People use fry when they speak too, to varying degrees. I think Americans use fry more than Norwegians do, on average. I don't use fry almost at all when speaking, one of my work colleagues speaks in fry voice a lot. Charlie Puth seems like the poster boy in this regard, it's why many think he's a baritone You're right, he uses a lot of fry in interviews and you can hear the rattle. Colm's official covers sound like fry, the lows sound kind of unreal but in this video for example it sounds like chest, doesn't it? youtube.com/shorts/fMRlnXPeFy8?si=mW6tV1SgyEk95F8A

He's obviously capable of singing a C2 in chest voice, which means that singing that note in fry voice isn't difficult for him. A decent fry singer should be able to churn out chesty fry notes where his registers overlap well.

honestly im surprised u even gave him a definitive voice type lol. i dont necessarily disagree with the assessment i personally just would not have been so brave not to be a loser but i am a huge one piece fan and his cover of binks brew is the best one ive ever heard. shoutout the instrumentation on that one for being better than any of the official versions His bolded F2's seem to be all M0. I found a super old video at the bottom of his channel where he gets down to a chest G#2, which sounded tenor like. Paul McCartney's early G2 that was posted recently sounds stronger. Colm has some pretty good C#5 belts. There are lots of high singers with good fry notes on youtube, it makes for spectacular videos. I find it hilarious that we live in 2024 and even with the endless footage of COUNTLESS baritones of various kinds singing high notes similarly or just as well as tenors, some people still struggle with this concept and think that baritones (especially higher baritones who can train to become almost interchangeable with lower tenors in contemporary music) somehow have an entirely different vocal mechanism or something. What do we need to do to put an end to this irritating ignorance that prevails among the greater vocal community? There also seems to be this new overcorrection happening where people have realised that 'wow tenors can sing low too' so now anyone with amazing lower notes and the ability to sing high notes is a tenor suddenly. Make it stop please. https://www.tiktok.com/@colmrmcguinness/video/7016707486283599109 This a tenor to you guys now? Cool, we're all tenors then [yes, he's clearly a baritone with a great high range and yes I came back to resurrect this stupid ass debate because I can't believe people are doubting it in 2024, *skip*] - signed, sealed, delivered, regards a fellow baritone who can also sing high and finds this high singing baritone-erasing culture in the online vocal community spaces quite ridiculous

Subs are generally thought of as unreliable the lower one gets, and that is if one has at least time to think before executing the note.

As a general vocal appreciation thing... I respect his vocal technique and versatility a lot, definitely a talented guy! Not a big fan of Colm's tendency to overproduce a lot of his covers and performances tho, they often end up sounding sort of overcompressed and lifeless with that super massive, layered sound he goes for, would be interesting to hear more stripped down material from him to highlight his voice a little more but that's just my slight personal critique.

youtu.be/9ka5jOzcGvA?si=UcX8mUkG02w_jvbR&t=326Here he drops through Eb4-Eb3-Eb2 in chest voice and finishes on a very gravelly Eb1 in fry mode. I think that one is too crackly to be subharmonic. It's much more difficult to sing that low instead of doing a scale, but Colm certainly has a lot of natural range. ..would be interesting to hear more stripped down material from him to highlight his voice a little more but that's just my slight personal critique. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDC9ZsOGKHkG#2-G#4. Anything from the Phantom of the Opera is difficult to sing well. It sounds a bit cheesy, but it's supposed to be.
