Cody Bonnette
Associated Acts: As Cities Burn (2002–2009, 2011–2016, 2017–2023), Hawkboy (2011-present), My Only Passenger (2023-present)
Vocal Range: F2-D5 (2 octaves, 9 notes)
Vocal Type: Screaming Tenor Who Was At His Darkest
{Vocal Summary}
One of the best mixture of genres in my opinion is indie rock and post-hardcore, as it can be the best of dreariness and desperation which can make for amazing music that gives a deep catharsis in any listener. And one man definitely pulls one of the more unique performances in such a mix being Cody Bonnette of the well-respected post-hardcore indie band, As Cities Burn, soon to be renamed, My Only Passenger. Bonnette is known for his wavering tenor vocals which sound vulnerable and sometimes a bit out of breath yet authentic, urgent and melancholic. He goes from moody crooning to almost “melodic” yelling in some songs, especially ones in early in his career. Bonnette at first played the clean vocalist in the first album while letting the screaming to his brother TJ Bonnette but even still Cody did have moments of sharing screaming alongside him and even a few times when he left the band. With Bonnette a lot of his frantic deliveries may be in tune with the lyrical content of his music which has to do with family, faith, relationships and personal struggles which may lay some baggage in how much it means to him. His high register can vary from sounding blistering to clear, mostly going a few times in the lower fifth octave and surprisingly unlike most contemporaries his low register is surprisingly used a lot with him doing decent second octave croons. Bonnette is considered one of the most cathartic musicians ever which have earned him respect by many fans and contemporaries of the indie and post-hardcore scene and it seems that he still feels the passion to keep going forward.
