{Vocal Summary}
Shizuku is the vocalist, rhythm guitarist, lyricist and composer of the Fukuoka-based indie rock/math rock band Polkadot Stingray.
She has a very identifiable, naturally smooth voice, and heavily relies on a lighter approach for notes in the fifth octave, usually in head voice, or even falsetto in the mid-fifth octave. She likes to contrast this natural smoothness by often using grit in her mid register to emphasise certain passages (“Uchouten”), and frequently brings a rocky texture to her lows (“Ningyo”) and falsetto (“Telecaster Stripe”) especially. Pushed to its maximum, this technique led to a few occasions of screamed vocals (“Kao mo Oboetenai”), mostly when interacting with the crowd. To stay on the raspy side of her vocals, she also likes to use fry for texture play rather than intent of creating any pitch, for instance to finish sustained notes (“Himitsu”, “Polkadot Stingray”). As for her falsetto, it is pretty bright and well controlled, and can be particularly soft (“Drama”, “Benikurage”).
Her overall light voice across her registers seems to confirm her voice type. Despite that and her tendency to create an even lighter and “cuter” tone for softer tracks and passages (“7”, “Electric Public”), her voice actually has more weight than she makes it seem. This makes her a fairly dark soprano with a frequently used and rather warm low register, with which she is pretty comfortable down to the mid-third octave (“Aun”). Still related to her low register, Shizuku also uses an occasional slight vibrato down there (“Radiant”), as well as rap-sung parts for verses of a few songs (“Bakemono Darake no Machi”), always with great diction (including in English, which shows that her studies in UK paid off).
She started off with a rawer vocal approach (circa 2015-2016), using more intentional rasp, vocal fry and flips (“Tasogare Psychic”, “Kokoro Koko ni Arazu”). Over time, she tamed her obvious passion to serve her singing better, and got more and more confident. She also improved her chest and mix registers, notably for sustained notes, and drastically reduced any shakiness. While Shizuku seems to prefer staying in her safe zone, she has great control over the different aspects of her voice. Her expressiveness, her embraced tendency to get more raspy, as well as her good understanding of dynamics create a nice and smart texture and contrast play in her vocals that’s always pleasant to listen to.
