William Jacob "Jake" Luhrs
Associated Acts: She Walks In Beauty (2003-2006), August Burns Red (2006–present)
Vocal Range: A2-A5 (3 octaves)
Vocal Type: Supportive Heart Baritone
{Vocal Summary}
When it comes to the expectations of metalcore, such a genre is brutal, in-your-face and maybe sometimes catchy and melodic. One band in particular who has been considered the most influential from the 2000s is the Pennsylvania progressive quintet, August Burns Red all thanks to their versatility, technicality and a mix of brutal and melody. But another reason would be their vocalist, Jake Luhrs being said to be one of the more expressive vocalists in the genre. His wild screams, dark growls and even ear-piercing shrieks have been considered as unique and iconic. Luhrs has a lot of control on his unclean vocals being able to maintain certain pitches and demonstrations of the mixture and tone he is going for with moments of almost sounding like barking to panicked yelling which were his main vocals for the earliest works. However around the time of Rescue And Restore, their fourth album with him, Luhrs started to polish his vocals to have a bit more melody in them as he sorta having a “melodic” take to his yelling while not going full-blown singing, a trait which only got more and more used as their career continued. With his newfound cleans, it is revealed that he is a baritone whose voice sounds very reminiscent to thrash metal singers especially the likes of James Hetfield with a lot of grit which he can maintain even when belting high notes and go soft when he sings in a more mid-range register. His lower register is sadly not used however as for the most part uses it when he does spoken word passages but I have hope that in the future he might change that. Luhrs definitely has earned his reputation as one of the most harsh vocalists in metalcore with a lot to offer with brutality and emotional handles which has had a great impact on any listener. Full heart support indeed.
