{Vocal Summary}
It’s been a month since your 20th birthday. You and your close friend from high school haven’t been speaking as much since starting junior college, which is quickly coming to an end, and you call them up to hang out on the biggest hill in your small suburban town. When you climb up there, in a field surrounded by woods with the hazy post-industrial skyline in the distance, you begin to think of things that have passed you by— some dark mental places, broken relationships and the like, but also the good times, moments like this when you could close your eyes and feel one with the evening sky, and one with your quickly slipping youth. Your friend is thinking much the same things, their shoulders pressed firmly against yours as you lay on the grass, but the feelings there are fully platonic… probably? You suddenly notice that the vape in your pocket is missing, but who cares— moments like these far surpass the fleeting chemical relief you’ve sought in the past. But seriously, where’s your vape? You know you brought it with you.
You sit up and look around to notice your friend’s 17-year-old sibling smoking at a bench, having tagged along this entire time and currently uploading a recap of the evening to TikTok with a musical accompaniment: "Pretend" by Alex G.
All joking aside, Alexander Giannascoli has steadily become one of the biggest names in the American indie circuit since the early 2010s, carving out a distinctly wistful sound commonly associated with the sort of situations I’ve described, connecting strongly with the psyche of disaffected Zoomers and younger millennials. More than that, though, he has shown skill in producing an eclectic variety of genres and moods throughout the years, making him one of the most well-rounded musicians in his scene.
As for his singing voice, Alex would likely admit that his technical ability is fairly limited. He is most comfortable throughout the 3rd and upper 2nd octaves, where his somewhat reedy, mid-range and frequently double-tracked voice (comparable to a somewhat darker-toned Elliott Smith) has the most control. Throughout the 4th octave he alternates between a lighter mixed voice, veering into falsetto as it rises towards the 5th, and a rather gritty and strained belting register, the latter demonstrated more often live than in the studio. His mid-to-lower 2nd octave, meanwhile, is actually quite comfortable sounding, though at times underutilized and not as strong in live settings. Also, he sometimes screams like a distressed animal, which is sure something to witness.
Nevertheless, Alex has shown a very impressive ability to chameleonically shift his voice between songs and albums. This is often done through pitch-shifting, and more recently autotune, but even beyond these effects, Alex has an uncanny ability to inhabit the characters he portrays in his songs— a first-time listener may struggle to distinguish that the decrepit lounge singer of "In Love", the hopeful repenter of "Forgive", and the regretful post-adolescendent of "Change" are all voiced by the same person (further compounding this is the fact that much of his most popular work was made as a teenager, before his vocal timbre had fully matured). He has also frequently enlisted female guest vocalists— Emily Yacina being his most frequent collaborator— whose harmonies and lead vocals blend and contrast well with Alex’s. Overall, I would definitely say his voice has improved through the years, and being as young as he is means more changes are bound to come down the pike.
