Ryan Kirby
Associated Acts: Fit For A King (2010-present)
Vocal Range: C2-F5 (3 octaves, 5 notes)
Vocal Type: Constant Death Row Tenor
{Vocal Summary}
My favorite kind of vocalists in metalcore are ones who can sing and scream at the same time within their music. While most bands in the genre have bands with a singer doing both, most of them have at least one to do screams and another doing singing as a clean/unclean duo. While this is more true of his later work, Texan, Ryan Kirby of the lauded metalcore band Fit For A King, has been praised for being a man of skill for both his screaming and singing style. Earlier in his career, Kirby mostly screamed and his scream is considered as one of a kind being able to do death growls and shrieks that are fairly easy to understand what he’s saying while other members did clean vocals. He is also renowned for holding notes while screaming for a long time, his longest almost clocking almost around 25 seconds. Every once in a while though he would have done a “melodic” scream in the choruses and hadn't done much singing until maybe around their third album. He has good texture control in his highs sounding almost similar to peers like Jeremy McKinnon and the late Chester Bennington belting high notes with a grit and clearness. His low register is not used as much (most of the time the low notes in the band are from the other members) he still uses it well when he feels it is usually in the background or spoken to give a deeper mood to the overall tone of the song. Kirby deserves the recognition that he gets as one of the more ambitious metalcore vocalists and definitely a staple of the genre so others can follow as one who can go for brutal sounds and melodic elements at the same time.
