Out of all bands and artists in Japan, few really stand out both as national treasures and well-known, respected acts internationally. the GazettE definitely is one of these, and they are a driving force of the visual kei scene they proudly stand for, firstly as an alternative and groove metal, kind of glam rock orientated band genre-wise. They little by little started moving to more nu metal influenced works, darkening and cranking up the heaviness of their music, incorporating electronic elements, and rapidly moving into the metalcore genre by the early-mid 2010s, which they had already been hinting at in the late 2000s. They always kept this captivating ability to range from poignant and moving ballads, to dark and heavy numbers that make you wince and sigh in satisfaction. Ruki has been the band’s vocalist, lyricist and very often their composer since they formed in early 2002.
Before diving deeper into the intricacies of this vocalist’s abilities, I would like to thank kuyashii for letting me redo this thread, and mention that parts of this vocal summary in italic (that is, other than releases titles) come from kuyashii’s own vocal summary on his old thread. In my opinion, he had very relevant references and points that I thought I’d use as well. Also, some songs tend to have quite a few notes close to each other, and more rarely 3-4 semitones one after the other (like “Last bouquet”). This isn’t due to a lack of attention nor intentional overinclusion to bump up the thread’s size, but rather a choice of trying to accurately represent how Ruki writes his melodies and screams. The linked songs below refer to precise timestamps, so don’t hesitate to click them to have an auditory representation of this vocal summary’s points.
The singer had a lighter voice in his early and mid twenties and was more obviously a tenor back then, between 2002 and 2005. He liked to use a high larynx placement to get a signature nasal, “whiny”, and childish-sounding tone, similar in style to Kiyoharu from Kuroyume and SADS (see “Sentimental na Onigokko” and “MAD MARBLE HELL VISION” for good examples). Ruki eventually dropped this style by the release of DISORDER, and nowadays only uses it in a more healthy and controlled way when performing old songs like “Dorodarake no Seishun” Makuhari Messe 2012/03/10 and “舐~zetsu~” Yoyogi National Stadium First Gymnasium 2017/03/10. Speaking of concerts, he mainly uses his mix register when interacting with the crowd or shouting lyrics, especially between 2007 and 2011 (“Filth in the beauty” Yoyogi National Stadium First Gymnasium 2008/04/20, “AGONY” INAZUMA ROCK FES. 2011/09/18). It could be observed that his shouts became more and more distorted as a concert went, though (“Ruder” Tokyo Dome 2010/12/26). This could lead to thinking that he decided to heavily reduce these shouts to prevent vocal damage.
His falsetto is pretty breathy and rather seldom used but well controlled, mostly for short lines or flips to soften a passage (“Miseinen”), occasional back vocals in the lower and mid fifth octave, sustained rolled r’s (“Psychedelic Heroine”), or woo’s in live performances (which compose most of the highs in the questionable notes section by the way). His screams started getting stronger and more distorted in the fifth octave in 2007, notably with the single Hyena (“BURIAL APPLICANT”), and in the fourth octave in 2009 especially with the release of DISTRESS AND COMA (“OGRE”). His live growls were more overtoney mid-range screams than actual growls for quite some time (“13STAIRS[-]1” Saitama Super Arena 2009/09/05), but he eventually gained the ability to growl properly by 2012. He is undeniably a very passionate artist who usually stays in his comfort zone but can effortlessly switch between multiple techniques and tones as he wishes to. Being one of the most charismatic figures of the Japanese music landscape for over 20 years now, Ruki still has beautiful years to come in his career to make us dream.
