{Vocal Summary}
There are a lot of people who are called modern renaissance people because their craft can be described as being solely theirs. In the punk world, there can be many people who may do this but many would just call it all typical anarchism meant to be against the system with massages we all heard about. But for some even in that space they can be creative. Enter, Georgia native, Joshua Porter or Josh Dies from the controversial raw rock band, Showbread. He and his band have been called mad men, traitors, Satanists and all kinds of stuff from people who do not understand his craft. His unique vocal style plus his unique musical background being a kaleidoscope of genres from southern rock, post-hardcore, industrial and alternative, is definitely a factor on what really causes people to wonder how he can do this mixed with his unique lyricism of postmodern ideas tackling Christianity as well as humor, reptiles as symbolism, anarchism, pacifism, anti-Calvinism and a dissection on patriotism as a form of idol worship. Dies is a baritone who mostly sings in a standard pop structured melody in songs and can mostly lack going higher as many of his contemporaries but then sometimes out of nowhere will go into screaming like a maniac with such an aggressive, panic-stricken delivery that usually sound higher than they are and makes one wonder if he has ever damaged his voice after doing this. Yet, surprisingly he manages to balance his clean and unclean vocals perfectly in each song depending if the album is a heavy album or a soft album (or both). His highest notes are all mostly screamed and his singing mostly stays in the mid to high fourth octave to slightly low fifth octave. However, his low register to me, is what is really impressive as it is usually rare for hardcore punk singers to sing low but he does it in such a moody and emotive manner that almost sounds similar to likes of his influence, Trent Reznor and only got better with age with him sounding like a bass singer in a church choir. Dies is indeed a modern renaissance with a lot of passion for Jesus and for sending messages of peace and perseverance and from what it looks he may have more to offer along the way and it will indeed be considered way out there from a different train of thought when it comes to art. God bless you, Pastor.
