{Vocal Summary}
Southern rock and metal has been seen as mostly macho and all about the life of people most outside the south would think of like cowboys, hillbillies and badass attitudes. Tennessee resident, David Bunton of the southern metal titans, The Showdown looks like he might fall in those clichés but his music is more of war anthems than the stereotypical southern pride. Bunton is a baritone who at first didn’t use his lower register much as he used to be in more punk inspired work. His main vocal style was screaming, growling and singing in a mid range. His screaming was very high in the earlier years following both punk and thrash influenced yells and shrieks and even though he tone down the pitch of his screaming in future releases he still has moments of raising the octave. His mid range is strong a gives the tough guy posture with grit and gruffness sounding similar to other groove metal contemporaries like Phil Anselmo, Randy Blythe and even Joe Duplantier with moments of “melodic” yelling. His lower register got more used with recent albums and does use it masterfully as again in a kind of virile tone, mood and atmosphere to the nature of the lyrics. Southern metal has a lot of great things to offer in terms of aggression and oomph that most metalheads love and Bunton is definitely one of the most talented individuals in the scene.
