Associated Acts: HANDS (2007-2011, 2017-present), Everything In Slow Motion (2012-present)
Vocal Range: F♯2-E5 (2 octaves, 10 notes)
Vocal Type: Laid Low Resting Tenor
{Vocal Summary}
In the realm of sludge metal most of the time the tone is dark and the mood is meant to convey a sense of pain and suffering. When it comes to Fargo resident Shane Ochsner of the critically acclaimed bands HANDS and Everything In Slow Motion, that can be true but also can be subverted into something hopeful. Ochsner’s voice has been described as sounding anguished, pissed off, and desperate mixed with the themes of wanting proof of the faith in dark times. His screams mostly sound broken when conveying that emotion but also does manage to sound like the usual sludge growls and shrieks from time to time. Around his early career Ochsner mostly screamed with as his main vocal style with occasional moments of singing mostly by him or by another band member. Around the album “Give Me Rest” however, Ochsner began to embrace more melody in his vocals more prominently and managed to make it his main voice in Everything In Slow Motion while screaming being secondary. His main voice mostly stayed in mid range singing with a more recent album from the latter mentioned band having more use of his falsetto in most of the songs which he masterfully uses. His lower range is very moody and has depth especially when the lyrics match the theme of reflection. Ochsner is another man in Christian music lauded for doing different things from the standard sound of the usual worship adding introspect and vulnerable displays and with more can use these songs as inspiration for even more honest work.
