{Vocal Summary}
Doom metal is a subgenre of metal in which vocalists can vary from different types of vocals and styles. Some tenors can sing in a classic rock manner, some that are baritone sing like a gothic vampire and some would even do death growls. Victor Griffin is one of the more well-known figures in the genre. Being mostly well known as the guitarist of one of the most respected and acclaimed pioneering American doom metal bands, Pentagram to his more Christian centered band, Place Of Skulls, Griffin has demonstrated his talents as a force to be reckoned with with one of the darkest sounding music of all time. While some may argue that his guitar playing is better than his singing, Griffin still manages to be a passionate vocalist in his own right. While he is no Bobby Liebling, Griffin’s voice is still soulful, straight-forward and catchy especially given the different mood with Place Of Skulls in comparison to Pentagram. For the most part Griffin’s high range doesn’t go beyond the fourth octave, same with his lower range where he most stays away from the second octave however despite the mid-range singing in all his work but even still manages to sound energized and vulnerable having the afflictions and inflections of a blues singer given the subject matters of his lyrics about being lost in the darkness and finding the light. While it may contrast the genre’s overall mood of darkness, despair and grief, Griffin makes the entirety of his sincerity fit. Griffin is a talented man who has an interesting career being one top of it all and going a more humble direction and it doesn’t matter whether guitar or vocals, the music he will make will always kick ass.
