Leon Ozug
Associated Acts: Aztec Jade (1992-?), Ascension Theory (2002-present), Silent Sons (2014-?)
Vocal Range: E2-G5 (3 octaves, 3 notes)
Vocal Type: Regenerated Tenor Observing Saturn’s Ring
{Vocal Summary}
Progressive metal has the tendency to have vocalists who may sound too complex and a bit pretentious when singing. But there are times where the singer can indeed impress with their versatility. New Yorker, Leon Ozug of the underrated prog bands, Aztec Jade and Ascension Theory may sound like your typical prog vocalist but I believe that he still manages to show off great skill in vocals. His high tenor is so masterfully handled that when he goes the fifth octave he doesn’t even use falsetto for the most part. Ozug’s tone is smooth, operatic, and calculated and never once did I hear a crack or him needing the need to add extra texture. And after his time with his band he has begun to do cover songs of various classics where he showed more of his versatility using his lower register which primarily in his bands only once got to the second octave. Ozug has a passion for singing and never felt like he does it for the attention or the pompousness of being in prog but for the fun and passion for music which in my opinion makes him one of the most underrated prog vocalists ever.
