George Harvey Strait Sr. (18 May 1952 - present)
Years Active: 1976 - present
Voice Type: Amarillo bar Toning
Vocal Range: D2 - C♯5
{Vocal Summary}George Strait is…well, don't let anyone tell you he isn't palatable, at least. See, this may elude you, but the guy has plenty of accolades to go around. Did you know that, when taking all charts into account, Strait has the most #1 hits of any artist? Ever? You probably didn't know that and I'll tell you why. Unlike other ginormous, stadium-filling acts like The Beatles or Taylor Swift or the Democratic National Convention or some such nonsense, George didn't really become the King of Country by being an artistic pioneer. He definitely helped create the neotraditional country sound and I thank him for that, but he isn't even the best at his own game in that regard (see: the next thread I create). No, he amassed so much fame and wealth and influence in the field of country music by being tremendously bland. Notably forgettable. A take-or-leave type of singer. By being so inoffensive he single-handedly ensured the general public wouldn't be alienated by him at all, that is unless you are that violently disenchanted with the U.S. state of Texas. When it comes to George Strait, you don't find people who dislike him so much as people who don't care or don't know who he is. Taking his obviously ginormous following into account, that's a nigh 100% rate of success right there.
Now, I'll lay off him for a moment. He has some good songs. Shocker! "Código" gets its fair share of listens from me in spite of how goofy I think it is. "Right or Wrong", "Am I Blue", "Fool Hearted Memory", all ways to do the neotraditional sound right. But it's like finding marshmallows in your glue; sure, we're all guilty of eating glue now and again. It's filling enough. But don't you secretly wish it was less in the way of schooltime adhesive and more in the way of fluffy, sugary goodness? I know I do.
His voice. His voice, his voice, his voice. It's basically one-to-one with all the stupid analogies I've been making. He very occasionally has some vocal moments that I find enjoyable (he damn well better with over 30 albums), but it's never anything awe-inspiring or even that unique. If you're decently familiar with country music you'll be able to hear George and know it's George. However, he is just a country singer to literally anyone else. A pleasant voice that gets the song across not amazingly most of the time, but serviceably enough so that the American south can get some sleep at night. He has a tinge of rasp in his higher range that I find sort of cool, not to mention relatively easy belts at that. On the lower end, notes that will neither make you think "that was pitiful" nor "holy shit he's a bass???" Fundamentally he is a comfort zone sort of singer, staying in his midrange most of the time and basically never pushing himself beyond something he could still replicate live on a bad night. And y'know, that isn't inherently an issue. Plenty of memorable singers whom I am failing to remember right now are like that. But those ones still have a greater sense of artistic identity than what I feel Strait brings to the table most of the time.
In closing, George Strait has said a lot over tens of albums without really saying anything. He's fine both musically and vocally and there are songs I'll surely revisit. However, knowing that he is universally considered the King of Country when so few outside of the country music sphere are even aware of his existence will never not be a hilarious thought to me. Dwight Yoakam, take me away!
P.S. CT wanted me to mention his mother in this vocal summary for some reason and I'm really not quite sure as to why. She's a lovely, hospitable lady and I think she likes George Strait. Good for her.
