Vocal Type: Rebuilding From Pain Soprano
{Vocal Summary}
Usually when women are in metal sometimes they can be attractive in their physical form which leads to many making a list of the “hottest chicks in metal”. Unfairly, this tends to overshadow what the musician listed can do within the realms of metal. Take for instance, Pennsylvania resident Sarah Anthony of the energetic Christian group, The Letter Black. She is a constant nominee in such lists yet outside of her physicality, she is a unique vocalist. A soprano with edge and finesse, Anthony leaves a big impact in the listener which her breathy melodies, mixed with some instances of mid-range screaming, crooning, operatic moments and even creepy toasting, and even moments of duet with the band’s secondary vocalist and her husband, Mark Anthony who is also unique in his own right. As mentioned before, Anthony’s voice can be considered breathing and having a bit of sass especially when matching the tone of a harder rocking song and can get more sentimental when the song is meant to sound, emotive, melancholic and even hymn-like. Her unclean vocals are also unique, having a lot of distortion, and she can do death growls when given the opportunity. Her lower range is also unique as despite being a soprano with some moments she can use the typical nu metal like “attitude fry” a la Jonathan Davis in which she can almost go to the mid second octave. Anthony is a unique vocalist who despite many remembering her as just one of the “hot chicks” in metal, she proves to be an exceptional singer with a lot of passion and fierceness that can rock the entire arena.
