Robert John Arthur Halford (25 August 1951 - )
Years Active: (1969 - present)
Associated Acts: Judas Priest (1973 - 1992, 2003 - present), Halford (1999 - present, on hiatus since 2010), 2wo (1996 - 1998), Fight (1992 - 1995)
Vocal Range: C2 - C6 (4 Octaves)
{Vocal Summary}Throughout his career, Rob Halford has been best known for his piercing and acrobatic upper register. Despite his second passaggio coming relatively high (around about G♯4/A4), Halford's mixed voice has always been a heady one, to the extent that his signature high 'wailing' has been erroneously described as falsetto by a number of sources.
From the beginning of his Judas Priest career, Halford was able to sustain well-rounded belted notes around the top of the fourth octave, as well as to soar spontaneously into heady fifth-octave passages on tracks such as 'Victim of Changes' and 'Run of the Mill'. The end of the 1970s and early 1980s was probably the time when Halford's mix was at its most polished, with good fluid singing around the top of the fourth and early fifth octave on songs like 'Exciter' and 'Beyond the Realms of Death' alongside his signature high wailing; throughout this time he was consistent and confident in sustaining powerful, vibrato-laden notes as high as A5, and even managed a B5 in the backing vocals of 'Dissident Aggressor'. Having experimented with a few different styles in his mid-range on Priest's first couple of albums including a lower-larynx approach, Halford also settled at this time into his more familiar brassy tone in this area of his voice, as well as doing a little more to neutralise his accent while singing up to the mid-fourth octave.
From about the beginning of the 1990s onwards, Halford's second passaggio has become the least stable area of his voice, and he has largely done his best to steer clear of too much singing around this territory, particularly in a live setting. When he is forced to traverse this area of his voice live for an extended period, he's liable to end up with either a reedy 'Mickey Mouse' quality or a thin and raspy tone. Despite this development, Halford has retained an impressive amount of his upper range with the passage of time, with some of his best ever high singing around the turn of the millennium on tracks such as 'Sad Wings' and hitting a few live C6s post-2000, including one as recently as 2015. These days he's still capable of tackling melodies up to around E5 and can bust out some impressive notes up to F5-G5 (and the occasional disembodied scream as high as B♭5) both live and in studio. His belting up to around G♯4, meanwhile, has become a more prominent feature in his vocal performances, and now carries a more husky tone.
Halford's lower singing even in his youth was also an enjoyable facet of his voice, sounding pretty comfortable in the upper second octave right from the beginning of his career on tracks such as 'Here Come the Tears' and showing passable backing vocals down to F♯2 by 1978's Killing Machine. With his voice probably deepening at least a little with age, Halford's lower register has strengthened with the passage of time, and his career in the 1990s with his solo projects Fight and 2wo which veered more towards an industrial metal sound provided probably the best showcase for his lower register, even making it down as low as C2 on a few occasions. Although he has less call to use it these days with Judas Priest, Halford did manage an E♭2 as recently as 2014 on 'Halls of Valhalla', and his most recent release, 2019's Celestial, still displayed some pleasant enough moments of second octave singing.
Halford's live performances have peaked and troughed down the years. Usually a strong live performer in his prime, the end of the 1980s and early 1990s saw Halford's live performances decline in quality; he subsequently rebounded well towards the end of the decade and into the 2000s. The end of the 2000s saw a deeper decline with 2008 perhaps being his poorest year in concert, but the last decade has seen more of a renaissance, with the most recent Firepower tour seeing Halford in possibly his best form in years; overall he sounds great for a guy approaching seventy years of age.
To conclude, Halford is an extremely talented vocalist; undoubtedly one of the most influential and emulated singers in heavy metal and one of the most enduringly popular frontmen of his era.

(a) This song is full of odd inflections in Halford's higher range; this is the highest one, although they're all pretty random in pitch.
[2] marks notes of questionable identity that cannot be confirmed to be the singer in question.
[3] marks non-melodic notes that don't have a significant enough pitch to warrant inclusion.
[4] marks notes that possess uncertain pitch or have been pitch-shifted.
[5] marks notes that do not fit the previous criteria but are not of a substantial enough quality to warrant counting towards the singer's range.
