Philip Whitman Elverum (23 May 1978)
Associated Acts: The Microphones, Mount Eerie, D+
Voice Type: Phil Elverum he's a tenor
Vocal Range: E2 - F5
{Vocal Summary}Man, where do I even start with Phil Elverum? I mean seriously how does anyone classify this man, let alone as a musician and/or singer. By looking at the thread alone, you would probably think he is nothing special as a singer, and by nothing special, meaning NOTHING special.
Because before I get to praising this man's work, if you're interested in Phil's vocal ability at all, you must know, he is NOTHING of a singer. Which is kind of amazing knowing his work and the typical focus around voices and harmonies ("Singers" especially as well as the early Microphones work). But yeah, he is mostly either low or just mid range (and when I mean mid-range, a hefty portion of his melodies and discography never goes above or below D3 - A3), but even the ends of his voice are mostly stretched, sounding undoubtedly whisper-y in his high range, like he is trying to be quiet recording his music at 2 in the morning when his mother already yelled at him. Resulting in him essentially never going above E4 on any occasion, despite being a very clear tenor. His melodies are often disjointed, wonky, shaky, nonsensical and overall just insanely weird.
Sorry if this all reads like I'm incredibly sleep deprived and all over the place, it's because I am.
Now, you might think, well then why the fuck would I want to listen to this guy if we take all of this into mind. Well you see, Phil Elverum. There is no way to describe him, he's just Phil Elverum. If you were to look into pretty much any musician ever, in terms of pure musical formula, structure and overall just insanity of sound combinations and all that, Phil Elverum is probably the most interesting and engaging musician I have ever heard of in my lifetime. Not necessarily the best mind you (Obviously there are better musicians out there, in terms of technical ability he is not the most amazing, good, but not amazing), but in terms of engagement and interest I have received from any musician in my lifetime, Phil Elverum would have to take the top spot.
The reason why I don't care about his lack of vocal skill and ability is because, at least from my personal perspective, sonically, Phil is a guy who does whatever he wants. The Microphones and Mount Eerie make random fucking music, and despite the fact that he has some monotonous, nonsensical and LONG (oh my god some of these albums are unreal levels of long it's absolutely insane) albums, I cannot say I was ever bored making this thread because of the pure raw, emotion that he puts into his music.
There are not many musicians in a lifetime that you would come across another Phil Elverum, and whether you like him or not (I sure as hell do), you cannot deny he is one of the most interesting musicians of the 21st century, if not all time.

NOTE: This man has so many fucking demos that it is impossible to count everything from that here, so this is only main studio albums he has recorded, albums such as the Song Islands, Singing From Mount Eerie (this also counts to albums such as Singers but for different reasons) etc. DO NOT COUNT TO THE ALBUM RANGES, otherwise I would have to count every single demo release from this man and frankly I do not have the time or energy to do that, nor should anyone to be honest, I tried gathering as many as I can as of now. But if you're interested, find them yourself. Thank you.
