Brash, loud and unapologetically herself, Mel B became a household name in equal parts due to her artistry and her attitude. Her strong personality and distinctive Leeds accent led to her being dubbed 'Scary Spice' while she was in the Spice Girls, a persona that appears to have carried over to her public life outside of the group. As a vocalist, she was perhaps the most versatile of the group; while most of the girls' usually took the same parts in harmonies, it was Mel who never remained stagnant, as she was equally capable of backing up the higher harmonies as she was supporting the absolute lowest ones. While her tone isn't one many would describe as pleasant (worsened later in her career by smoking and other vocal damage), its husky timbre is nonetheless distinctive, providing a backbone for many of the group's iconic harmonies. Though in recent years she's largely stepped away from the microphone, Mel's characterful vocal delivery was the force behind many of the '90s most iconic hits - "Wannabe" just wouldn't be the same without Mel's iconic opening lines.
{A Few Examples of Her Voice}
One of Mel's highsier performances and also one of her more recent - you can tell her voice is damaged as she struggles to replicate it live, but it's a pretty solid overall vocal performance
A more subdued performance with some solid lower notes.
Mel takes on a surprising amount of the harmony parts here - lots of soft singing and some great lower notes.

Spiceworld (1997): G2 – C♯5

Disclaimer: In the Spice Girls' harmonies, it was occasionally difficult to discern who was singing what. Mel B and Victoria often sang the lower notes whilst Emma and Mel C sang the higher ones, however this was not an absolute rule. To make it more complicated, the harmonies sung on the studio versions of the songs weren't necessarily the ones sung on live versions, there were some cases where one member was implied to be singing when they actually weren't, and there were times where one member was singing one of the harmony parts whilst also singing another part/ad-lib on top. I've listened to the group's albums and live performances several times and I think I have a pretty good knowledge of who sings which parts, but I am not infallible and appreciate any kinds of constructive criticism on these threads.
