William Stanley "Bear" Rinehart III
Associated Acts: NEEDTOBREATHE (2001-present) Wilder Woods (moniker) (2019-present)
Vocal Range: F2-G5 (3 octaves, 2 notes)
Vocal Type: Washed Tenor From The Outside Wasteland
{Vocal Summary}
Southern rock is mostly a divisive genre with most people. Some may like the riffs and melodies while others will not due to the lyrics of most songs being about southern life which most find corny. And then there's southern acts who do all they can to stand out in a grand way while still going with the aforementioned traits and still be received with acclaim. Enter South Carolina native, Bear Rinehart of the soulful southern anomaly, NEEDTOBREATHE. He has been praised as a one of a kind singer with his loud powerful gruff tenor vocals which can be impossible to replicate even if one would try. His esoteric voice is full of warm richness and power of which he can switch from sounding like a suave swagger, a Spirit-filled worship leader, to a broken man about to lose it. I think he does warrant his name “Bear” since he actually does sound like a bear with his graveling performances that makes him sound like he is growling. To first time listeners, he may be a bit strange for them but can easily get some getting used to. His gritty voice is full of southern bliss and is mostly apparent in his high register in which for the most part he only stays around the fourth octave and higher notes are either in falsetto or yelled, both of which he also masterfully does well too. His lower register also maintains his southern isms with his deep crooning and broody. Rinehart is probably one of the rare occasions that he mainly stays in the main voice and rarely does his own backing tracks and lets his other band members do the lower harmonizing. But what really surprises me the most is for a hoarse texture, he works perfectly with the genre he is whether it be rock, southern, folk, country and even RnB which he explores in his solo work as Wilder Woods. Rinehart is a master of texture and will remain one of the most bombastic and unique singers of our generation.
