Daniel Paul Haseltine
Associated Acts: Jars Of Clay (1993-present), The Hawks In Paris (2010-present)
Vocal Range: F♯2-E♭5 (2 octaves, 9 notes)
Vocal Type: Good Inland Tenor Monster Who Is Still In The Zoo
{Vocal Summary}
Folk rock is a unique genre for it’s sound however speaking of vocals they can vary but for the most part are mostly the least adventurous in that genre. Singers tend to stay in an almost monotone delivery, sticking to the mostly downbeat tempo of the music. Masseshussettes native, Dan Haseltine definitely fits the description but in a way still manages to sound unique among this type of music. Being the frontman of Christian folk giants, Jars Of Clay being one of the most influential bands of all time, Haseltine managed to be one of the biggest faces in Christian music and also one of the busiest. His voice at first made me think he was a baritone due to his delivery being mellow and never really going higher in notes, however with more analysis later see that he is a tenor who mostly sticks to the tropes of folk music being more of an esoteric genre. His mellow timid voice almost sounds youthful in a way singing similar to hearing someone giving a poem but carefully improvising the melody as he goes along. His highs usually stay around the mid fourth octave while higher notes are almost all falsetto, although with time he has gotten more expressive than earlier in his career with the band. Apart from mostly sounding too down-to-earth, Haseltine does have his moments of singing more soulful and with a bit more bombast, especially in recent material. His lower register is used a lot given his dry delivery with the songs being able to bellow down the mid second octave almost sounding both snarky and melancholic. For whatever he decides to do when singing, Haseltine managed to stand out as one of the biggest figures in both CCM and folk rock having done many songs that have impacted many lives and inspired others and no matter what he delivers it will be one of a kind.
