{Vocal Summary}
Our lead singer will be Spencer Sotelo, whose voice goes up like an angel and down like a wounded ox.
- “Ragtime Dandies” by Periphery
Known for being the lead vocalist and frontman of Washington D.C.-based progressive metal band Periphery, Spencer Sotelo is famous for having some of the most ferocious screams in the metal scene and showcasing vocal gymnastics in a large high register in clean vocals as well. He started singing around 15/16 years old, and later discovered his screamed vocals when he got his driving licence to drive to work; child of a very religious family, his car would be his only safe space to start developing his voice.
In his first released projects both in solo and with Periphery (2010-2011), his voice sounded noticeably thinner, quieter and strained, despite an already obvious comfort and agility in his high register in particular. In an interview with Chris Liepe back in 2022, he claimed that he was still subconsciously reproducing what his own idols Mike Patton (his biggest influence) and Corey Taylor were doing, and was looking up to Periphery’s previous singer Chris Barretto (who’s also known for being Monuments’ singer from 2013 to 2019). He explained this as not really being himself, and not recognising himself when coming back to his earlier works, and also analysed that physical tension was causing him to experience vocal struggles. It is of common agreement between Periphery fans and Spencer himself that with the band’s second album Periphery Ⅱ: This Time It’s Personal, he really started to come into his own and finding his identity as a singer. He started learning to be more relaxed in both studio and live settings and makes it a key point of his self-taught technique. His vocal endurance and diversity very noticeably skyrocketed from there, always challenging himself further and pushing the limits of his range.
Spencer has soulful vocal signatures up his sleeve. They are characterised by his recurrent use of pop-inspired vocal runs (“Scarlet”, “Remain Indoors”) in his naturally gritty cleans that contrast so well with Periphery’s heavy and technical music. Also, he demonstrates contrasted flavours of screams, going from outright violent and voice-cracky screams that he executes by adding distortion through his vocal break as shown in another video with Chris Liepe in 2021 (“Reptile”, “Dracul Gras”) to fat, dark and ferocious false cord screams (“MK Ultra”). To that, add his effortless ability to aim precise pitches and melodies while screaming (“Omega”, “Satellites”) and to switch back and forth with his clean vocals, and we have a really competent and singular singer right here. As he got more and more comfortable and refined his technique along the years, his screams went from mainly sitting in the mid and upper fourth octave with a handful of instances in the fifth octave, to usually being in the upper fourth and lower fifth octave, with much more ease to push them to the mid and upper fifth octave. As for his death growls, he mainly uses them to double his vocals (recording example here), which darkens the atmosphere of his band’s songs. Speaking of doubling his vocals, he loves to bury lots of harmonies when recording and producing his vocals (“Graveless”), mastered in a way some harmonies are hard to confirm, so I used the Periphery vocal stems floating around on the net to make things easier for me.
Being a high placed singer, Spencer has a blatant preference for the higher register he thrives in, belting notes with great ease, and tactically reserving the mid to upper fifth octave range for climactic passages and on the peak of small runs (“Racecar”, “Absolomb”). He has a natural twang that could be considered a bit of an acquired taste as observed in the metal community, but can also demonstrate a surprisingly clean and warm tone for a singer of his kind in his low register, mainly used for lower harmonies (“The Way the News Goes…”, “So…”). The extremity of his low register is where he uses fry for creepy, breathy and usually non-melodic notes (“The Scourge”, “Retrograde”). He has claimed that Mike Patton is the singer who inspired him to expand his range not only high, but low as well, which is more obvious on King Mothership’s album The Ritual. His falsetto is rather sparsely used but while not being his strong suit, it is still well controlled (“Feed the Ground”, “Stranger Things”). With the release of Periphery’s second EP Clear, he started giving it more love, especially in his other projects.
Now to dive deeper in these, he really shined with diversity in his electronic/industrial metal solo project ENDUR. Indeed, outside of Periphery, he is able to show different vocal approaches, especially with Nik Mystery and King Mothership. The former is synth pop-orientated and showcases the singer’s very pleasant laid back side, where his tone is a lot softer than what he got us used to with his pronounced grit in Periphery songs, even across the fourth and fifth octave in chest and mix registers (“The Internet”). He valorises his mid and low register as well as his falsetto more (“NOW”), and pushes the production of his vocals a little further to enhance their smoothness. Same could be said about his solo demos published on his current Soundcloud page. King Mothership is probably his most eclectic, eccentric and avant-garde project, ranging from expressive and comedic lines (“Babby”) to delicate parts that often put his falsetto more upfront (“Ego 101”), as well as frightening screams from the depths of hell (“Cosmic Meltdown”), not to mention the rather unpredictable melodies he came up with.
Coming back to Periphery shortly, Spencer explored more possibilities of his vocals with HAIL STAN, where he started playing around with tone darkening more, as observed in “It’s Only Smiles”. Still on the same record, he has demonstrated the very bottom of his dark and menacing death growls in “Follow Your Ghost” touching F3, and “Satellites” is arguably one of his best studio vocal performances ever. 4 years later with Djent Is Not a Genre, he came up with his hardest vocal performance ever written (as claimed by himself on the day Periphery performed the song for the first time), “Wax Wings” which reiterated, hell, even surpassed, the iconic sustained F♯5 in “Ragnarok” that he executed 11 years prior.
Lastly, moving on to his live vocals, despite being self-taught and not having the most comprehensive technical knowledge, he never experienced any vocal injury and always managed to pull off performances that command respect despite the sicknesses he often experienced right in the middle of tours, such as laryngitis. By the time he understood and learned how being relaxed hugely helps him vocally (circa 2011), he has always shown consistency through his demanding material, and an increasingly comfortable and engaging stage presence and vocal endurance. Additionally, he demonstrated quite a few instances of inhaled notes, which he started implementing in concerts in mid-2013, and are always pig squeal-like screams that he executes brilliantly and consistently, always getting a few surprised reactions from the crowd (“Ragnarok” Bottom Lounge 2023/11/12). Ultimately, he often overshadows the studio version of older songs when performing them live, indicating he’s currently better than ever. From a notewatcher perspective, I had a blast diving deeper into the nuances of Spencer’s vocals (who’s been a huge influence for me since like 2016), and I’m fairly confident that the best is still yet to come.

You can check the live pro/semi-pro footage and fancams I notewatched via this YouTube playlist of over 1800 videos. I’ll keep going through fancams if I happen to come across some more, but by April 29, 2024, I have explored YouTube at great length: each channel that has posted Periphery live videos when searching for videos from 2010 to 2024 has been explored, and I also made sure to check other live videos featuring Spencer.
