William Brent Hinds (born January the 16th, 1974)
Associated Acts: West End Motel (1993 - Present), Four Hour Fogger (1993 - 1999), Fiend Without A Face (2001 - Present), Mastodon (2000 - Present), Giraffe Tongue Orchestra (2011), Legend of the Seagullmen (2015)
Vocal Range: F♯2 - F♯5
Vocal Type: THE LAST BAR(IT)ON(E)
Runner-Up Vocal Type: Schnozzy Schnozborne
{Vocal Summary}The runner-up vocal type was NOT kidding. This dude is Ozzy Osbourne filtered entirely through the nasality of Alabama country-boy madman Brent Hinds.
Brent was one of the first singers in Mastodon to pick up cleaner vocals (even though he did his fair share of manic screaming) and, as already mentioned, is very distinguishable by how nasal and pointy his voice sounds. Because of that, it's a little polarising and many Mastodon listeners frequently rank him as the worst of the three singers. Personally, I think that they're missing how important Brent's voice is to the band.
Despite some people not getting past the nasality, Brent tends to carry the band's more emotionally potent moments with his sharp nasal belts and dramatic croons. Songs like The Last Baron wouldn't work half as well without Brent working damn hard to earn the song's reputation as Mastodon's magnum opus. The Cold Dark Place EP is also a great example of just how much soulful weight Brent carries with him. It's a great contrast with his insane guitar playing.
That being said, one of my favourite parts of Brent Hinds' voice that is seldom utilised, especially as he gets older, is that weird erratic screechy side. His screams are notable among the band for being the highest and the most wild and in the band formed before Mastodon, Four Hour Fogger, he frequently would peak the microphone with how much wild 5th-octave screeching he was doing. It's probably better remaining uncommon though, if the 2007 Download Festival performances are anything to note.
Overall, people should stop hating Brent's voice!!! Let him be the weirdo that the band and we as people need.
