Troy Sanders (born September the 8th, 1973)
Associated Acts: Four Hour Fogger (1993 - 1999), Social Infestation (1995 - 1999), Mastodon (2000 - Present), Killer Be Killed (2011 - Present), Gone Is Gone (2016 - Present)
Vocal Range: A1 - D5
Vocal Type: SPLIT YOUR LUNGS WITH BARITONE THUNDER
{Vocal Summary}Metal Gandalf, much like the rest of Mastodon, is a very easily identifiable singer within the fields of metal. For most parts of the bands' career he defined their sound with Zeus-like delivery: truly splitting his lungs with blood and thunder every time he opened his mouth. To this day that's still a fairly accurate description, but as time has rolled on he's shown that Greek Gods have no limits when given a microphone and a bass guitar. His belting abilities, while still thunderous in nature, seem to expand with every year and even though they aren't as gritty or harsh as they were early on, they still carry some incredible power for a dude as low-placed as he is.
Speaking of lows, the dude basically hid them from the world for years on end until the later 2010s, only to surprise us with a Big Baritone Breakfast of growly, boomy low notes that had tone all the way down to the high first octave. Though they're not as well-developed or as preferenced as his high range, when he's on an atmospheric passage you best believe that darkness in his voice is seeping its way into the track with the presence of a movie villain cutting through the protagonists world with a nihilistic monologue. His speaking voice is also very soothing to listen to, which is strange considering how much of a madman he usually is.
While Troy isn't my favourite vocalist in Mastodon, I gotta respect just how much EFFORT he puts into every ounce of his performance to really earn that God-like edge. If you see any of Mastodon's in-studio stuff you'll notice that every square inch of his body is actually being possessed by some otherworldly power the moment he gets close enough to that microphone. And once you've seen his incredibly expressive face concentrate all of his power into every note you won't be able to unsee it.
