{Detailed bio}Zak Stevens is easily recognized for his dramatic and theatrical voice that has distinctly been heard as a driving musical element of bands like Circle II Circle, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and perhaps most prominently, Savatage. In Savatage in particular, his voice has made for an interesting foil to the band's other vocalist, Jon Oliva (whom he was originally hired to replace, but eventually ended up serving co-vocal duties alongside) - as Oliva's signature sound in the band can be best described as a "evil madman" style delivery with lots of grit and aggression, Zak by contrast often sings with a very "heroic protagonist" type of sound, with a very handsome vocal tone and a strong sense of melody and control. Early on into his career, he was very prone a high belting style that ascended well into the fifth octave and sometimes featured powerful, piercing screams in the E5 range and higher. As time went by, he gradually moved away from this style and adapted to a more dramatic baritone style, for which he began to more frequently sing in the second octave, but usually limited his high range to the upper fourth octave or so. This especially became the case during his years in Circle II Circle, though he has on occasion in recent years revealed that he does still have some of his fifth octave range still intact - albeit with less power than it used to have. Additionally, a major trademark of Zak's vocals over the years has been his of vocal counterpoint sections in songs - where he records an entire choir of vocal tracks singing different lines over one another in harmony. This was first heard on the Savatage track "Chance", and is something that has been heard on at least track for just about every album Zak has recorded since then.
Zak's first band of any prominence was called Wicked Witch, which was formed in the late '80s and only lasted a few years before breaking up. The band never made it as far as releasing any properly produced studio songs or albums (at least not under that name), but recorded a demo album that showcased some very impressive vocals by Zak. At this stage in his career, he was singing almost exclusively in his high and mid range, and tonally bore a considerable resemblance to Geoff Tate with some aspects of his delivery. Many of the songs on the band's demo feature strong fifth octave notes and melody singing by him, sometimes carrying melodies as high as G5, as heard in "Rainbow's End", and hitting strong notes up to G♯5 and A5, also heard in that track and in "Love Lies". Though Wicked Witch broke up when Zak joined Savatage in 1992, they later reformed in 2007 and shortly afterwards changed their name to Machines of Grace. This version of the band released a self-titled album in 2009, which featured studio versions of several of the songs from Wicked Witch's '90s demos. However, it was very audible on this release just how much Zak's voice had changed in the years between, as the songs were tuned a half step lower, and the vocals omitted many of the high notes that had been present in the previous versions - featuring nothing higher than C5 on the entire album.
In 1992, Zak was hired to be the new vocalist of Savatage, after being hand-picked by Jon Oliva to serve as his own replacement, and made his debut on their 1993 album Edge of Thorns. This album was well-received by fans and contained a number of tracks that were featured in the band's set list in subsequent tours; most particularly the title track, which went on to become one of their best-known songs. It also featured what were arguably Zak's strongest vocals in the band, with entire lines sung on F♯5 at the end of "He Carves His Stone" and powerful E5s in "Follow Me" and "Lights Out". The time after its release, however, was a rather unusual point in their history that saw almost a complete turnover in their lineup in barely the span of a year. Aside from Jon departing the band after the album's completion (as he had still stuck around to record keyboards on the album in addition to co-writing and co-producing it), founding drummer Steve "Doc" Wacholz also sat out of the album's tour, which instead featured touring musicians filling for both of them. Following the tour, however, tragedy struck the band when founding guitarist (and de facto band leader after the departure of his brother Jon) Criss Oliva was killed in a car accident in October 1993, which almost brought the band to a complete halt in the grief and uncertainty that clouded its aftermath. Wacholz chose to leave the band permanently, and bassist Johnny Lee Middleton chose to take a hiatus. However, Jon Oliva was inspired to keep the band going in his brother's absence, and wasted no time in writing and recording a new Savatage album with Zak on vocals, himself on rhythm guitar, bass, keyboards and drums, and new guitarist Alex Skolnick on lead guitar. This album was released in 1994 and was titled Handful of Rain, and was followed by a tour that featured Zak and Skolnick in the same respective roles they played on the album, Jon on keyboards, rhythm guitar, and some additional vocals, Middleton returning on bass, and the new addition of Zak's drummer from Wicked Witch, Jeff Plate, on drums.
In 1995, Savatage's lineup shifted again - Zak, Middleton, and Plate all remained in their previous roles, but they were now joined by two guitarists replacing Skolnick - Chris Caffery (who had previously been in the band in the late '80s serving as a second guitarist alongside Criss Oliva) and Al Pitrelli. In addition to this, Jon Oliva began to reprise more of his role as a vocalist during this time, creating a two vocalist dynamic that was prominently featured in both the band's live shows and on their studio albums. They released two albums with this lineup - 1995's Dead Winter Dead and 1997's The Wake of Magellan, both of which primarily featured Zak on lead vocals, but each featured two tracks sung by Jon. Zak's tessitura also began to noticeably shift a bit around this time - while all of his previous releases had featured fifth octave melody singing and head voice screams up to at least E5, both of these albums were sung much more in his belting range, with the highest notes on either being C5. However, it was also around this time that Savatage's music fully transitioned into a more theatrical type of sound, which Zak's voice lent itself to very well, especially in the range he was utilizing for it. In addition to this transition in Savatage's music and Zak's vocal style, this period saw the launch of a new project founded by Jon and Savatage producer Paul O'Neill that would quickly surpass that band in terms of commercial success - Trans-Siberian Orchestra. That band was born from the success of Savatage's one radio hit single "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)", and quickly achieved widespread popularity for its brand of "Christmas-themed metal". Zak recorded backing vocals on all of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's albums up through 2009, and also sang the role of The Muses on their 2000 album Beethoven's Last Night, as heard on the track "The Dark". Since 2015, he has also served as a regular part of their touring lineup, and has regularly performed with them every November and December as part of their annual Christmas season tour.
Though Zak was involved in the writing process for Savatage's 2001 album Poets and Madmen, he quit the band on amicable terms in 2000 due to his wishes to spend more time with his young family. In light of this, he took a short hiatus from music for a few years, but reemerged in 2002 with a new band called Circle II Circle, whom he began writing and recording original music with. This went on to become his primary musical outlet for the next 14 years, during which he released seven studio albums with them - Watching in Silence in 2003, The Middle of Nowhere in 2005, Burden of Truth in 2006, Delusions of Grandeur in 2008, Consequence of Power in 2010, Seasons Will Fall in 2013, and Reign in Darkness in 2015. During this period of his career, Zak became much more conservative with his range - now usually avoiding the fifth octave altogether, and sometimes not even singing higher than B♭4 for an entire album. Though he did still sound very strong and consistent across the range that he did use, it was clear that he did not seem to be as confident in writing vocal parts above B4 as he previously had, and was much more focused on keeping his singing reserved to his mid range and lower high range in the studio. However, he did continue to cover quite a lot of Savatage songs with Circle II Circle - even going as far as performing the entirety of Edge of Thorns and The Wake of Magellan on certain tours. For these performances, he always sung the songs tuned down a half, but usually still hit most of the fifth octave notes from the originals, albeit often with a noticeably weaker vocal tone than previously.
Circle II Circle never officially announced a breakup, but after 2016 they stopped performing live or recording altogether, which seems to imply at least a lengthy hiatus. In the meantime, Zak formed a new band in 2019 called Archon Angel, who released their first album Fallen in early 2020. The band did not get much chance to tour for this album, however, as the Covid-19 pandemic hit shortly after its release. Nonetheless, they went on to release their second album II in 2023, which saw Zak beginning to be more daring vocally than he had in a while, even hitting a sustained harmonized D5 and F5 in "Quicksand". Other guest appearances that Zak recorded around this time also saw him starting to explore his fifth octave a bit more again, showcasing other occasional notes in the C5-E5 range. Though these notes now sounded weaker and less resonant than they previously had back in the '90s, it proved that this part of his range was in fact still intact, even if he had lost some of his tonal blending between registers over the years. Aside from that, Zak participated in a one-off reunion with Savatage in 2015 to perform in a joint Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert at that year's Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany, this time featuring himself and Jon Oliva on joint lead vocal duties. This sparked talks of a possible full-scale band reunion, and eventually in 2023 it was confirmed that this was officially in the plans. Though the exact timeline of plans seems to currently still be a bit in limbo, the band has announced that they have reformed the full Dead Winter Dead/The Wake of Magellan era lineup to record one final album, with the working title Curtain Call. I for one look forward to seeing what this album could entail, and hope it makes a strong use of Zak and Jon's interesting duality and strong dynamics as co-lead vocalists!
