{Vocal Summary}
LiME is currently known as Kizu’s singer, composer, lyricist, and a multi-instrumentalist in his spare time (guitar, bass, drums, piano) since 2017. But he’s been in the music industry a good 15 years now, more specifically in the visual kei scene. He didn’t stay for a very long time in his first projects, and then joined LEZARD, a colourful and upbeat band, for over three years. He however grew tired of playing the cute visual kei band member role and blatantly forced himself to smile in live performances. He therefore left the band to, half a year later, form his longest and most successful band so far: Kizu. The indie band’s name means “scratch”, “wound”, and their concept is to heal people’s wounds with their music, their lyrics. For instance, LiME travels a lot and has been writing about the tough living conditions in a country he went to in the song “Juusei”. On Twitter, a fan even warned him about the anti-personnel mines in that country. “Kuroi Ame” deals with the Hiroshima and Nagasaki disasters caused by the atomic bombs; LiME wrote the song during the 74th commemoration in 2019. Kizu’s dark music combines melodic, acoustic moments with powerful and dynamic metalcore influences to animate their deep visual kei image that often showcases Japan’s traditional style. The band has been releasing a bunch of singles, a best-of and live DVDs so far, because LiME doesn’t want to release albums again.
He seriously is one of a kind. He is a strong personality in a quickly rising visual kei band. Being a high placed tenor with a powerful voice, he frequently relies on his mixed register and belts brilliantly executed notes up to the middle fifth octave. He has notes in the E5-G♯5 range early in his career but hasn’t always shown this comfort up there. He sounded a lot thinner in his upper mediums and higher register, dealing with inconsistent tone and the undesired kind of rasp (“DRIVE”). He now largely developed his technique, engaging lines with nice dynamics and great tone control, whether it is for climactic moments (“Milk”, “Ame Otoko”, the latter probably being his best recorded vocal performance), or high harmonies (“Little Girl wa Yandeiru.”, “Love Song”). Kizu’s songs usually being tuned in drop B♭, B♭4 has become kind of a go-to note for him and this region of his voice doesn’t really put him in difficulty. His strong vibrato has always been a well controlled signature (“Heisei”, “0”), while admittedly being an acquired taste. He is capable of pretty smooth vocals and delicateness (“Hato”, “Juuhachi”, “Oni”), and of bringing more twang and an impressive rasp (“蛙-Kawazu-”, “15.2”) that can lead to violent false cord screams, usually used live (“Yume”). For screamed lines in songs however, he rather relies on strong fry screams and despite using them sparsely, he is competent at these (“Kizuato”, “Steroid”). His falsetto also isn’t used much, but given his nice control of it (“Iki no Dekiru Shigai”, “Jigoku”), it is most likely a stylistic choice that serves Kizu’s high energy songs rather than a sign of weakness in M2.
As for his low register, it wasn’t really given much love in his earlier bands, but quickly developed it as a considerably strong part of his vocal range with Kizu, using it about as much as his high register in their songs. However, while he is good at grabbing quick but intentional and controlled low notes, he is also rather approximate with what note he is reliably going for in a song (“Yume”: F♯2 here, C♯3 in the same passage later on). That being said, he always manages to somehow stay in the song’s key, vouching for his tangible control and good sense of spontaneity. Despite his breathiness already starting when approaching the bottom of the third octave (“Hitomidori”, “Kuroi Ame”), once again proving his high placement, LiME is capable of strong tone and relative comfort down to the middle second octave (“Negai”, “Shoujou Sono ⑵”) and even approaching the lower second octave when starting to mix with a little bit of fry from F2 roughly (“Anagura”, “Oni”). Additionally, while it was something he vaguely hinted at earlier in Kizu’s career (“ELISE”, “Human Error”), he started using agile rapping a little more coincidentally with a nu metal-like style with the release of the band’s 10th single Strawberry Blue (“Strawberry Blue”), sometimes in a more melodic way (“Bee-autiful days”). It was also around that time that the band’s arrangements started being more intricate and advanced.
Now LiME’s live presence, albeit engaging and conveying his rawest emotions bluntly, seems to put his abilities shown in a studio setup in the shade: he sounds a more stretched when approaching his extremities, very often leaves out lines, screams them or just interacts a lot with the audience (“蛙-Kawazu-” Zepp Tokyo 2018/09/24, “Juukyuu” LINE CUBE SHIBUYA 2022/01/08). In spite of that, he has also shown that he is entirely capable of properly rendering his studio prowesses (“Uramibushi” Ebisu LIQUIDROOM 2018/05/03), so this raw display on stage is most likely a cathartic approach for him and a deliberate choice rather than inability to hold a concert of 1h15 to sometimes 1h50. Regardless, he remains a highly diverse vocalist as well as an important artist of the visual kei scene who has room to keep growing and pushing his limits.
