Summary:
For almost four decades Tom Araya was the frontman of Slayer, arguably one of the most influential metal bands of all time. The band was formed in 1981, utilising Satanic themes and imagery from the beginning. Their song "Aggressive Perfector" was featured on the Metal Massacre III compilation after Metal Blade Records founder Brian Slagel discovered the band during a show in 1983. This led to some underground attention and a recording contract on the aforementioned label. The band then recorded and released their first album, Show No Mercy, which garnered yet more underground attention and popularity. In 1986, after an EP (1984's Haunting the Chapel) and another album (1985's Hell Awaits), Slayer released their much-lauded third album, Reign in Blood. Responsible for bringing the band to the attention of the mainstream metal audience, it has been referred to as one of the best metal albums ever, and was very influential to the thrash metal scene of the 80s. They went on to record numerous albums and embarked on multiple tours, right up until their dissolution in 2019.
Araya's vocal style changed over the duration of Slayer's career. Towards the end of the 80s he stopped going into the mid-upper fifth octave, and started to sing in the upper fourth/lower fifth octaves with a chesty-sounding technique much more often than he had previously at that time. This became his consistent vocal style right up until the end of Slayer's career. His lower range was heavily underused across Slayer's discography, though still strong enough when he did decide to use it. As the frontman of the heavily influential and now dissolved Slayer, Tom Araya has solidified his place in the metal halls of fame.
