Ima Murasaki is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, lyricist and arranger from Japan. She started her musician career at 17 with an eclectic selection of covers on her YouTube channel in 2019, ranging from J-Pop to occidental artists’ classics. Please note that most of them are now private and only available in shortened versions via her Twitter account. She started being featured on songs in 2022 and eventually made her debut as a solo artist releasing her own music in mid-2023 with the single “Golden Time”. She later gained more visibility with her recent hit song “Mashou no Onna A”, aka “femme fatale a”.
Ima is unmistakably a soprano with a pleasant, breathy and slightly husky tone (“Back to Black”) that she started adopting increasingly more in late 2020 and became her go-to style in 2022. Indeed, she had a more “energetic” and less breathy approach at her beginnings (“Hyoushin o Kamu”). In her original music, she likes to contrast this laid back and dreamy-sounding style with incisive rapped parts as observed in “Bonjin-sama” and “femme fatale a”. She has a great sense of pitch accuracy and rarely gets pitchy, even on raw, untouched vocals, while also delivering a playful expressiveness (“Flatline”, “femme fatale a”), and soulful performances (“Dangerous Woman”, “Seasons of Love”, “Chandelier”).
Her low register, while not being her strong suit, is well controlled and consistently used down to the lower third octave. She occasionally starts mixing with fry a little around F3 (“Virtual Insanity”, “Bouya”, “Not Queen”), but will usually prefer to use her pure chest register, even if it has to be very breathy (“Yoru Naderu Menou” 0:20, “Emil”, “Fukakouryoku”). Circa 2023, her voice eventually deepened a little which resulted in often clearer low harmonies and a slightly easier access to the bottom of the third octave.
Her strengths obviously reside more in her high register.
