Eric Clayton of Saviour Machine is one of the great voices of Christian metal, and his dramatic baritone and theatrical stage presence are legendary in the scene. Known for his gothic timbre and wide vibrato, it is no surprise that Clayton cites Bowie as his biggest influence (the name of his band also makes this apparent). Even so, he is certainly no clone and has developed one of the most unique heavy music discographies of his generation. His low register is the stuff of legends (no pun intended), and he carries that signature tonal depth into his higher register with a great amount of resonance. On top of that, he's a master of dynamics with the ability to control volume shifts within a phrase regardless of the range involved. To my ears, he's one of the best baritone voices in metal because he doesn't have to pretend to be a tenor to fit the innate drama of his style. He proudly wears the banner of a deep voice in all areas of his singing, and it is always exciting to see how he's going to implement it in each new release.
