Uhhh what happened to us concluding that those grey notes were actually undertones that were actually sung an octave higher? I remember we all agreed about that being the case for the bottom notes from "Morphine Child", "I'll Overcome", "Pagan Pantheon", and "Far Beyond the Astral Door". Why are they still listed as second octave (or first octave, in the case of "Pagan Pantheon") after all that discussion we had about this on the Discord?

haha, to be frank... you confused me. They're throat sung, and that is conveyed in the thread, it's not a case unique to him. and it's obviously a technique that he is pretty good at, he uses them intentionally in melodies. So I feel that said notes should be listed in the thread as 2nd/1st Octave (As Grey of course). Apologies for the Confusion.

Sure, it's very impressively controlled throat singing, but the fact is that the notes he is hitting there are not 2nd/1st octave notes. We went over this quite a bit in the Discord the other week, and I thought everybody was pretty resolute on agreeing about that. Not sure how much of that discussion I need to recap here to make the point again, but in summary he's singing lower third/upper second octave notes that he's applying the false cords to in a way that creates resonant undertones, and is effectively sneakily disguising those lower third/upper second octave notes into sounding like very impressively projected lower second/upper first octave notes.

I remember the "Far Beyond the Astral Door" clip was one of the ones that gave it away the hardest to me - it starts out sounding like he's singing a strong C2 followed by a strong E♭2, but then on the next note it starts to sound kind of like a G2 and kind of like a G3 at the same time, and then by the last note he is very obviously singing a C4, even though it sounded like he only moved across the span of an octave the whole time. That's because the notes that sounded like C2 and E♭2 were actually a throat sung C3 and E♭3 that were so darkened they sounded a whole octave lower. On the G3, the fundamental pitch began to become more audible, and then by the C4 he wasn't singing with the undertones anymore. None of that passage should be counted for anything lower than C3, nor should any of the other clips I mentioned (except for "Pagan Pantheon", which should be counted for A2 instead of A1). Of the notes that you currently I have bolded, the lowest one that I'm hearing as being the actual legitimate pitch you have it listed for is the "Before It's Too Late" D2, but everything below that is lower second/upper first octave with undertones.

We've seen other instances of low notes like this by Dave Mustaine, Tim Owens, James Hetfield, Chad Kroeger, Jim Gillette, Tom Araya, and I'm sure some others that I'm not remembering right now. With most of those kinds of singers, they're not actually intentionally throat singing - they're just messing around with grit tones and carrying it into their lower range, which effectively is what creates these kinds of undertones, and is the technique behind that mechanism on a basic level. Berzan is definitely someone who's mastered it to a very impressive level and clearly uses it much more deliberately than any of them, and that's really cool! However, we don't count the undertones that any of those singers achieve as upper first/lower second octave when they do it, and we really shouldn't change the rules for Berzan just because he does it more convincingly with better control than them. Same goes for singers that can achieve overtones on their highest notes to make them sound an octave higher - they may deceive our ears at first into thinking they're hitting sixth/seventh octave notes, but we should still count them for the fundamental pitch that their vocal cords are actually hitting.

If I in any way didn't make this clear enough during that Discord discussion I apologize, but I thought between myself, Electric Mami , mushymarionette and amadeusd we had explained this quite thoroughly, and had made the point clear as to why it's sometimes necessary to distinguish between the pitch that a note may sound like because of some kind of affectation like this, and the fundamental pitch that it actually is. I understand that it's a bit of a confusing concept, but it's one that's very important to distinguish when it comes to guys like Berzan who have those kinds of deception tricks up their sleeve.

But yes, I would say the fundamentals are going to be an octave up. I'm not across every example in the thread, but I agree with Henny, overall. I think it's been canvased before even here on the forum that Throat Sung notes are always listed by their fundamental.

It has never been question not to do that on any concerned thread and I don't see why this thread would make an exception. The examples of other singers using a similar tone do not show such intent nor control so that's why their subby notes are disqualified in comparison

That doesn't really clarify anything because some of them sound like first octave but are actually fundamentally second octave lol, so if it was one of those that you were talking about I agree I think? 

The way I see it, if there's any way that we can debunk the validity of the pitch that a note sounds like, we should not be counting it as that perceived pitch. If there are singers out there who are SO convincing with their technique that none of us hear it as anything but the pitch it sounds like, sure I guess we can count that as such? But I would not say that that is the case here. Berzan is VERY good at his throat singing technique and disguises it to sound like he's hitting legitimate lower second/first octave notes very effectively, but there are still enough giveaway signs that the notes his vocal cords are achieving are actually lower third/upper second octave, to the point that I can't in good faith agree with counting them as lower than that. You can hear it in some of the clips that I pointed out in the previous post - how when he moves higher and transitions out of that throat singing, he seems to "skip" a whole octave suspiciously, when in reality he was never singing in the octave it sounded like in the first place, and that's why he's able to jump up to seemingly higher notes so seamlessly. In addition to that, as I mentioned in my previous post, you can hear a distinct difference between some of his more genuine second octave notes, like the "Before It's Too Late" D2 and the "Boguk" F2, because those are much smoother and more quiet than the throat sung ones, the way an actual chest voice note in that range is more naturally prone to sounding. Seems like his low range isn't actually that naturally resonant or powerful - he's just VERY good at manipulating his voice in a way that makes it sound like he has these massive lows, but in reality he's just hitting very average male low range notes and playing with the tone of them.

Also, if we're going to let those kinds of notes be counted as first octave, it basically suggests that we should count Eric Martin and Fabio Lione's highest notes as upper sixth and seventh octave because of the way they apply overtones to them (even though we've examined them closely enough to confirm that that is not actually what they are hitting either). It would also imply that we should count better-controlled instances of throat singing by other singers as the non-fundamental pitches as well, like this D3 (disguised as a D2) by Tim Owens:

As far as I'm aware and for forum consistency matters, there is no reason to do it for every subharmonic technique but this particular throat singing technique. We know a subharmonic or throat sung F1 isn't actually an F1 but an F2 in a certain vocal folds/false folds usage, so we could, as you said, debunk it and say "No it's an F2" because we know it isn't what it sounds like from technical knowledge rather than being able to hear it. By the way, basing ourselves on being able to hear the fundamental or not is way too arbitrary to be a reliable standard for the forum, in my opinion. I know we have quite some subjectivity in countability and whatnot already, but we also try to rely on tangible technical knowledge and analysis as well, right? With subharmonic techniques, you're creating something lower that doesn't exist in natural voice, as opposed to overtoney screams that are enhancing an overtone that was always there to begin with, which is why the overtones comparison doesn't work

Oof. I do agree with this, but I think a consensus, or at least a majority consensus could do well enough - what else could we go on?

I think throat singing gets a bad rap when it comes to these sort of discussions because a lot of people who do it aren’t that good at it or do it accidentally. For example, the main reason that the Tim Ripper note isn’t counted in the thread is because the undertone isn’t really that convincing. Like Maxim says, it sounds like a dark third octave note.

A more convincing example would be something like What Made The Red Man Red with Candy Candido. This is a better executed version of the technique and many people probably wouldn't consider it controversial to count as a B♭1, even if it still falls under what you could conceivably call throat singing.

Though another problem that arises when judging these kinds of notes is that sometimes a singer might flip in or out of a certain subharmonic technique. Take this clip from Scatman John where he starts in the fourth octave, trails down, flips into subharmonics around C4, before finally landing on A2/A3. In John’s case I think his technique is well executed and clearly intentional, but I think counting this as an A2 would still be strange considering the context of the melody.

My rule of thumb for these situations is that If I were to transcribe it, what would I transcribe it as? Using the examples from earlier, I think the Scatman John clip makes more sense as an A3 to me and the Candy Candido clip makes more sense as a B♭1 even if they are both subharmonic techniques.

Hmm. Not an unreasonable thumb you have there - but this is going to lead to some serious inconsistencies as between different note-watchers claiming to hear the sub 'more clearly' than others or whatever. 
It's tempting to want to accept low subs as range-expanding. Thats why I say a consensus could avoid that. Or, we just accept that different threads will be inconsistent as to how throat sung notes get listed.

This is another clip that makes it VERY apparent that no matter how much the first note in it may sound like a C♯2, it's all actually third octave, as evidenced by how little space you hear between it and the fourth octave when he moves up there and starts singing the same melody in that range. Great C♯3-G♯5 though!

His throat singing is a cool trick for sure, but there is enough of a discernible difference between it and genuine lower second octave/first octave notes/passages that I really can't get on board with counting these notes as such.

At least on "Far Beyond the Astral Door" case, I honestly hearing it as C3 even from the beggining, just with a obvious very strong throat sounding, I learned that with Robert De Niro C#3 sounding as a C#2.

I mean I agree with Mami logic yes, but no with the hearing with first two notes are perfectly executed on subharmonics.

EDIT: There's at least some notes below I'm actually hearing as 1st octave though, the B1 from "The Hourglass" sounds pretty convinceable to me as a one of them!

My issue when considering the context of the melody comes into play when I find a note like this, where he seems to start at the second octave then suddenly he slides up and skips past nearly an entire octave, however at 2:00 he pretty clearly seems to be aiming for E3... so it would make sense (at least in my mind) that he is intending to lower it an octave for that final climax part. I wouldn't be comfortable counting both as third octave whenever one is so clearly intended to be an octave lower. Would I count the E at 3:24 as third octave even though there is nothing else in the melody that would Identify it as third octave? And if I we're to count it as second octave, it would be pretty inconsistent to include this one as the note perceived and not the note in that final slide, considering they are the exact same technique. The Black Sabbath cover is a pretty similar case I think. At 1:45 in the left channel, he goes for the same melody without throat singing. I don't think the intention was to raise the octave and make it a C#3 - G#5 Melody for the next part? especially considering he turned the screen PURPLE!!! :Scoob:. He is clearly aiming for second octave and I think including it as third octave would be inconsistent in the context of the song as a whole. And aside from it looking weird on paper, the melody line skipping an octave isn't inherently wrong? It sounds fine? The context of the note doesn't change what the note/technique actually is, if it's a throat sung C2 or E2... Then it's a throat sung C2 or E2, Changing how the note is perceived depending on context doesn't 100% sit well with me, especially with Berzan here.

I mean, I think we all agree on this, but I think precisely the reason why some people are in favour of not counting those notes as their lower undertones is because he doesn't really manage to generate that second octave sound as such (even though he is clearly aiming for that and that's his intention). I mean, for counting a note with an undertone like that it is not only a matter of verifying which tone the singer is pointing towards, but also what tone he was ultimately able to play.

And if you listen closely to most of his first and second octave notes, he doesn't really generate that solidity and legitimacy in his undertones convincing enough to count as a first octave, even though he is quite good at generating undertones. Compare it for example with some lows of guys like Attila Csihar, Phil Anselmo or Ville Valo and these really don't sound so well connected and accomplished to really operate as a second/first octave note compared to the aforementioned ones.

However, I still believe there are some countable points below C2 here to count as that, but it would be a matter of simply analyzing each note in each case and not applying a general inhibition for all the notes done with this particular technique.
