With her musically simple but lyrically poetic songs, her distinctive, gruff voice and her bewitching stage presence, the past fifty years has seen Stevie Nicks craft a unique place for herself in music history. Initially successful with hits like the symbolic "Rhiannon", it would be her tumultuous personal life - primarily her well-publicised cocaine addiction and her on-again, off-again relationship with Lindsey Buckingham - that would inspire her greatest hits in Fleetwood Mac, the success of which allowed her to branch off on a highly successful solo career.
Stevie's voice has frequently been argued as the centrepiece of both Fleetwood Mac's music and her own. Initially a lower mezzo-soprano, Stevie's relatively low placement meant she often took the middle part in the group's harmonies, the roughness of her voice providing a stark juxtaposition against the more delicate voice of Christine McVie. Her '70s material focused primarily on her potent belting ("Gold Dust Woman") and occasionally her soft head voice ("Dreams"), though over the course of her career, she began to place a greater emphasis on her strong lower register, notably sounding much more confident singing the low notes in "Landslide" live now than she did in the '70s.
