Mark Shelton of Manilla Road was one of underground metal's true icons. With a career spanning 4 decades of quality metal music, he never relented in pursuing his artistic vision and pushing epic heavy metal to new levels. As a singer, he's known for his deep yet nasal vocal timbre that often switches between a more dramatic clean tonality and a gruff roar. This has often led to him being described as a "love or hate" singer, but to my ears no voice better fits the mythological feel of Manilla Road's music. Decades of smoking eventually lowered his voice considerably, leading to a shift in tessitura from a 3rd/4th octave centric mid range to a range more characteristic of a bass-baritone singer, but in spite of this he never lost his signature tone. His passing on July 27th was a huge loss to the metal world but at least he passed away doing what he loved, bringing metal music to a legion of loyal fans and spreading the ultimately uplifting message of escapism that he championed his entire career. R.I.P. Mark, may your legacy live on!
