The Crown-Prince of Darkness, Nick Cave has been terrorising the underground since the early 70s. Cave's musical pallete has gone through various upheavals throughout his career, from the rotting post-punk of The Birthday Party, the brimstone of the early-industrial deep south of the Blixa Bargeld Bad Seeds years, the poignant ballads of the 2000s to his forays into subtle minimalism he finds himself in nowadays. Cave has been a hugely influential figure on various musical acts and has worked with a plethora of other artists ranging from Lydia Lunch and Current 93 to as far off-character as Kylie Minogue.
Cave's voice is pretty much impossible to mistake, a fiery howl occassionally subdued by a spiritual wisdom. While Cave's voice is heavy and reasonably low-placed, he shows little agility in his lower register, generally a choked, smoky rasp. His upper register doesn't fare much better, similarly squashed and dry, but surprisingly more utilized in his later career than earlier on (where he was much less sensible with it). But then again, if you were being serenaded by a wolf, I'm sure you wouldn't be critiquing it's pop sensibilities.
