I was wondering if yall could start putting Vocal Type classification back on singer profiles. I remember the range planet included vocal type classification.

We've gone back and forth over time about what exactly to do with voice types, and we seem to have settled on just leaving them optional. Some threads have them, some don't; it's up to the individual threadmaker.

I was curious as to why there are so many duplicate songs in each profile? I'm a new user (and new to singing), so I know there might be a very good reason for why that is the case, but I've been getting flustered because I've been referencing the singer profiles as a way to find songs in my range, but so many songs are listed multiple times that the lower sections are basically pointless. Why list a song as having a G4 if the singer also hits a B4 in the song? I have been copy and pasting profiles into word documents and using the search function to find dupes so I can find the high notes of each song, but I wanted to ask why it's like that in the first place.

Can't speak for everyone, but this is how I personally go about things.

-Differentiate between registers (i.e. singer hits a chest G4 but also a falsetto B4)
-Differentiate between frequency (i.e. the pitch that is hit more prominently in the song, such as the main melody is around G4 but trills up to B4 on the final chorus)

and finally

-Differentiate between quality (i.e. A singer hits a G4 that is bold worthy in the song, but the song tops at B4)

When you combine these you can get different combos such as: Bold G4, predominant A4s, and topping at B4.

But when you incorporate different registers, that's when things can get spicy. Such as: Predominant C5s, Bold D5, Chest top E5, falsetto top B5, and whistle top E6.

So that's why there's duplicate songs, at least for me.

The highest and lowest notes are not always the most representative of the nature of a given song.

You could always just find the lowest and highest notes from that song and ignore everything else, it takes about one extra second.

If you mean a vocal range thread, you'll want to post that in the Work-in-Progress Threads section, just below Range Stuff. If you mean more of a personal ranking of your favorite singers, that'd likely be best put in your own Off-the-Wall thread.

I'm noticing more and more threads lagging behind on being updated with new releases or contributions, could there be a system to put these up for claim again if they haven't been updated in a disproportionate amount of time? Or a thread to flag specific contributions with staff who do have the editing rights.

Usually we sort of assume that our members would have the initiative to claim an inactive thread for themselves after a certain period of time, but it would probably be helpful to have some kind of system to clarify so-called 'orphaned' threads indeed; I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of putting a time limit on updating a thread whenever there's a new EP out or something, if that's what you mean. There are instructions on the Singer Index for claiming threads, and it does apply to inactive threads as well, but it should probably be clarified as to how exactly it applies.

I'm not sure what you mean there. All staff members have editing rights, although we tend to discourage editing members' threads willy-nilly if we don't know their whereabouts. Ideally non-staff users would take these threads for themselves, since over 2000 threads is a kind of mess to take care of for a handful of people.

Hi, I've made a thread for my friend for his birthday, he's an active user on the site and has released music where he's the vocalist. since i never made an account and have just lurked on some threads here and there, i'm unsure where i should be posting the thread, so i figured i'd ask here. would it belong to the regular threads or would you classify as a personal thread instead? figured i'd ask before i post so i know where it fits best.

is it considered bad etiquette to notewatch missing albums/songs for someone else's thread and comment my findings in the comment section of it? i've seen some other people do similar things but it tends to be on a smaller scale so i don't want to be rude. i was also wondering about what happened to the old website and how long this site has existed in some form or another

It is common to share songs and go "some <insert notes> here", so you can go ahead if you'd like to, yes. For albums I suppose you can do it if the OP hasn't notewatched the album while it's been released for several weeks, or just share a (legal) link to the album if it's an older album that the OP hasn't found online. avi recently notewatched the latest Foo Fighters album in the Dave Grohl thread and commented their research, and we want to incite that behaviour more. As for what happened to the previous versions of the forum, I'll let a longer time user peer answer, as I've only been there since June 2022 as a user myself
