Russell Allen is unquestionably one of the most powerful singers in metal today. The dude's level of vocal control, expression, intensity, and technique are absolutely top tier in the modern metal/rock world and he seems to only be getting better after over 20 years in the business. First rising to prominence as the frontman for prog metal gods Symphony X in the 90s, Russell quickly established himself as a singer of such presence and skill that everyone seemed to want a piece of him in their music. An extended list of collaborations began to develop which saw Russell stretching out his stylistic boundaries into various musical scenarios that would previously be unprecedented for him such as the groove metal of Adrenaline Mob, the musical theatre vibes of Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the AOR of Allen/Lande and many others.

The most celebrated aspect of his vocal technique is his belting which he's honed to be consistently resonant whether he's singing clean notes (i.e. Without You) or letting loose some intense grit (i.e. Domination) but he's also got some soulful vocal chops in his high range that are often overlooked, most famously demonstrated in the melisma bit of Wicked. Generally placed more in the tenor spectrum it is perhaps unsurprising that his low register has taken some time to properly shine but when he does sing in the 2nd octave the results are often quite soothing and memorable (give a listen to his live renditions of The Snow Came Down or the intro to The Sacrifice as examples).

NOTE: I did not count any of the ambiguous harmonies found in early Symphony X albums. Some of these contain strong 2nd octave notes like in The Divine Wings of Tragedy or The Death of Balance/Lacrymosa, but I am unable to verify that it is Russell's voice. It is notable that the sound of these harmonies matches the sound of the harmonies on SX's debut album before he joined, so I suspect that these backing vocals were handled by the other members of the band.

So, as I was working on updating the Matt Barlow thread (which should be up soon), it occurred to me that since we don't actually have any ban on counting controlled vocal fry notes I had no reason not to count his fry Bb1 from What I Am. For the sake of consistency, I have added back Russell's G#1 (plus a few other of his lower extremity notes) as I feel it doesn't misrepresent his range so long as it is accurately colored grey. I realize I've flip flopped on this several times but in this instance I'm hoping to put the issue to rest. Guess we'll see how that goes lol.

Also, I'm still taking votes for what bolds you'd all like to see in this thread so feel free to post suggestions here. I figured the B4 in Out of the Ashes, the D5 in Absence of Light, the D5 in The Haunting, and the Eb5 in Kiss of Fire are some good starting points at least.

If I had to choose one for the link, I guessthis one, but admittedly it isn't that great in isolation, especially when you have to cut off the very preceding note. I'm thinking more about the overall effect of the notes throughout the whole song, but that might not be what you want.
For Awakenings I was just thinking of the final note. The D5s in this song are another example of great notes throughout the song without one being a real shining example.

Can definitely offer some suggestions for bolded notes, but also wanted to suggest that we put that "Of Sins and Shadows" live G♯5 in the spoiler, since that's kind of the very definition of a questionable note in the sense that it *sounds* like he hits that pitch, but the recording quality is so poor that it doesn't seem verifiable.

Don't forget about the sung (albeit quieter) F2 in this version of "Unchained Melody" by the way!

Ah that's a tough one for me to pitch so thanks for that. I added some bolds to the OP now based off my own preferences and what others had suggested in the thread so far, but it's probably a bit heavy on the SX material. I'm open to more bold suggestions either way ofc.

For now, I added the notes from the new Joel Hoekstra album (nothing fairly typical main span of C3-Eb5 there though there was also a spoken F2 and a sung A2 in a bonus track) and the notes you listed for This Christmas Day including the bold Bb4. I don't think I can list it for Eb5 unless you find the performance you were referencing that contains it though.

You kind of answered your own question there. They have some slight crossover of technique sometimes but I don't think it's fair to say any of them is "better" necessarily, all three of those guys are the very top tier of hard rock/heavy metal singing. I will say that I'd probably call Soto the most versatile of those three but even then it's largely because he has the most recorded output and has done the most guest appearances. Interesting trio you've selected there though, if Midnight were still around (R.I.P.) that would be a terrific Ayreon/Star One singer lineup right there.

It was fantastic! Honestly I have little hesitation in calling TSO my favorite act I've ever seen live at this point. It's just such an absolutely satisfying concert experience in every way you could possibly hope for as an audience member. This was my third time seeing them, with my previous two times being in 2018 and 2019, and my second time seeing them with Russell, as he had to sit out the 2019 tour due to an injury during rehearsals iirc. That year that he was absent, they replaced him with a newer vocalist named Caleb Johnson performing the songs that he normally did instead, and he honestly did such a good job of emulating Russell's style on them that I didn't even realize it wasn't him at first! It wasn't until they did member introductions around the middle of the show that I learned it was someone else lol.

Anyway, this year they had Russell back alongside Caleb, which made for an interesting combo. They still had Caleb singing a couple of the songs that Russell had previously done, such as "Good King Joy" and "The Three Kings and I", but they let Russell do "This Christmas Day" again, along with this new song for him "Ornament", which as you can hear was quite a good performance. Other than that, I also got to see Joel Hoekstra shred it up as one of their guitarists, along with half of Savatage (Zak Stevens, Chris Caffery, and Jeff Plate) in various roles, so suffice it to say that was really cool as well.

I'm hearing an A4 at 0:56, B4s at 1:10, a nice C3 at 2:02, a B2 at 2:23, a C5 at 2:44, and lastly a D5 at 6:54. Pretty much hits all the best spots in Russell's range with this one. :playball:

Russell's been doing an extended vocal outro solo at the end of "When All Is Lost" on Symphony X's most recent tour. He hits an E♭5 here, and sounds like an E5 at 11:53.

With Zedd Squared's permission, I'm notewatching the newest Allen/Olzon album, Army of Dreamers. Here's what I found:

I hadn't listened to the previous Allen/Olzon album in 2020, but I didn't consider how much it would alter the tessitura Russell used on this to be singing alongside a female vocalist instead of Jørn Lande. Now they have Olzon doing most of the higher stuff, and Russell only really gets up there on certain solo parts or on parts where the two of them are singing higher sections in unison together. You would think that that might mean there's more room for him to sing some low notes instead, but nope! Once again it's a case of singing "less high" instead of actually low - with just lots of third octave stuff and only one song getting below E3.

The other major difference that I noted from the Allen/Lande albums is that while those ones had a certain number of tracks with both vocalists together and then others where it was each of them singing individually, this one was entirely duets. Which is cool too I guess, but I feel like it maybe gave the previous albums more variety to mix it up like that.

Pretty sweet live guest appearance here! Russell isn't visible on the screen at all, but you can definitely hear his voice there on certain parts. Mostly nothing higher than B4 or so, but there was this part that caught my attention...

Sounds like a couple of E5s here that I think are Russell, and then afterwards I hear somebody hitting a G♯5? Probably not Russell I'm guessing, but perhaps it's Zak Stevens? Cause that would be a new highest note for him if so.
